Dear James

Elizabeth Charlotte (Alexander) Canning (1805 - 1882) [1]: place of birth query

I am concerned about the birth location given here for the second wife of Stratford Canning 1786-1880. Here's why:

  • My own genealogy database gives her place of birth as "India". Not totally helpful. And nowhere near Kent. I have sourced that in a file note from me to me to "Burke's Landed Gentry 1965 for the loan of which I am indebted to WRA". Unfortunately - on a number of counts - WRA died last October. His widow may know where the book ended up, but William had an awful lot of books.
  • Wikipedia says of Eliza's Dad, James Alexander (1769–1848), that "He returned to the United Kingdom in 1818". Eliza was born in 1805. I don't believe everything I read in Wikipedia (nor indeed in Burke's LG), but this little para is on the face of it plausibly sourced.
  • Wikipedia says that "Somerhill was bought from the descendants of William Woodgate in November 1819 by James Alexander, MP. See my previous comments both about Wikipedia and about the year of Eliza's birth (which her death certificate, of which I currently have a "certified copy" oin the desk in front of me) endorses.
  • James Alexander married Eliza's mother, identified in my own data as Eliza Dundas. on 01 May 1804 in Calcutta (as it was known at that time). A long way from Kent. Again.
  • You have - or someone has - apparently sourced the (?wrong) birth location of Eliza but I am not in a position to evaluate the persuasive power of the source(s) invoked. Maybe ... maybe you are.

I should like to change the birth location to "India". The Genealogical Society in London has (or used to have) endless East India Company directories etc from which I imagine someone with sufficient mobility and enthusiasm could find a more precise birth location for Eliza, but right now that ain't me.

What do you think?

And thank you for any thoughts on this that you may be moved to share.

Though if you are convinced, I shall be more than happy if you make the change without further discussion!

Be aware that I have just posted this same message on the talk page of Dr David Hughey who appears to be co-curator (or whatever the wikitree jargon is) responsible for Eliza's page. There may be a wikitree way to send one message such as this to two people simultaneously, but if there is, I have not yet discovered it.

Be well

Charles

Hi James,

I'm interested in the Hume line in Ireland. I think I can trace back our line to 1792 with a land lease from Gustavus Hume in 1792, who I think might have come from Humewood House in Wicklow, Ireland. The lease goes from Gustavus Hume to John Hume. But I can't find any record in any other trees. Maybe you might have some more information Thanks Rob

Hello James, I'd like to propose Anne Cary (Cary-2435) as one of the daughters of Francis Cary (Cary-932) and Juliana Pyne (Pyne-331). I believe Farncis adn Juliana to be some of my 9x ggparents. And Anne Cary to be an 8xggm, by her marriage to Hugh Prust (Prust-70).

As well as Anne and George, Francis and Juliana also produced: Elizabeth (1590-), Wilmot (1592-), Susan (1595-), Robert (1597-1689) and Richard (1601-) Best regards, Ant Davey

Hi James,

Who is the Gateway Ancestor for the Echlin family? They have a lineage to the Magna Carta William D'Albini but cannot find the Gateway Ancestor link for their family?

Thank you

James, I'm unable to add the parents of John Tyrrell as he is pre-1500. Regards, Chas.

HI James. Would you have a look at Richard Boughton? He's got the oddest wife I've seen on any of these profiles!

Hi James, Can you find time to drop me a PM, please. I need to confirm a profile we are both interested in, but in various sources I find conflicting information.

Seeking your opinion.

Did you know there is a link to your profile in the bio of Bingham-828? It doesn't seem to mean anything or belong there.

Thank you James for the information on Juliana Arthur. I see that her Father was William Arthur. The only information I have about our William Arthur is around 1810 in West Virginia. I'm trying to find our ancestry in the U.K. But I have no other names or dates.
