Most of the Billingsley profiles in WikiTree appear to have been created based on information from the "Billingsley Book" by Colonel Davis.[1]

This book has been found to be inaccurate in numerous family lines & especially lacking in documentation for the family in England. Davis was constrained by space and time - he did not, apparently, conduct research in England of the Billingsley family. Luke Potter has (for example, see Luke's post discussing his research about the two Johns in this Genealogy Forum post).

I hope that this page can help sort out and correct the Billingsley profiles in WikiTree, using Davis's seminal work as a basis for research to confirm or correct his information.

Split of the Billingsleys

Comment posted to Billingsley-58

A 21st on a male line from Wyllym de Byllyngsleye Kings Clerk to King Edward I '1306 State papers' the progenitor of all B,s . I have a photo taken 30yrs ago of a fragile document in private hands to agree with Luke Potter that our U.S. cousins were misled by Davies. Two Johns after Wyl. led to a split to 3 bros. Stephen remained in Hallon Shrop. leading to Sir Francis - William went to Cantab. Cathedral then to a living in Lincoln as Bellingsley and Roger's line went to London leading to the Lord Mayor. Henry who married Abigail and later Agnes was one of a number with that name trading with Holland from London whose children migrated with many Quakers to the U.S.

  • Brothers, apparently sons of John, who was son of John, who was son of Wyllym de Byllyngsleye Kings Clerk to King Edward I
    • Stephen Billingsley remained in Hallon Shrop (ancestor of Sir Francis)
    • William Bellingsley went to Cantebury Cathedral, then to a living in Lincoln (ancestor of...? Roger?)
    • Roger Billingsley went to London (ancestor of Sir Henry, Lord Mayor of London)

Henry Billingsleys, 1550–1650

Following originally compiled and posted on profile page for Henry m Agatha Houtmans (Billingsley-346). Copied to this page Sept. 26, 2016.
The profile for Henry Billingsley-346 is shown with birth in England after 1562, marriage to Agatha Houtmans before 1612 in England, and death before 1659 in Rotterdam, Holland. Information in the profile would indicate that he died before 2 January 1642. Also, although no children are currently attached to his profile, text has him as father of Francis and John (which is extremely likely), whom Davis has as sons of John Billingsley and Agatha Cooper. Henry and Agatha Houtmans may also be the parents of some of the other Billingsley immigrants to America that Davis shows as John's sons: James, Thomas, and William.
Billingsley researcher Luke Potter shared his findings about various Henry Billingsleys in a 2015 post to aid in determining which one was the Henry Billingsley in Rotterdam who was husband of Agatha and father of John. His 2015 post has more detail, but following are dates/parents (known and speculative) of the Henrys he listed:
  1. (1) Sir Henry Billingsley, Lord Mayor of London, died 1606. Son of William Billingsley and Elizabeth Harlowe. "He left a will in 1606 which details a number of his immediate and wider family." - Billingsley-107
  2. (2) Sir Henry Billingsley (1564–1629). Son of Sir Henry Billingsley (1) and Elizabeth Bourn. Left no estate either to pay his debts "'or to mayneteyne his children.' [National Archives, C2/Chas1/B20/48]" - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  3. (3) Lt Colonel Henry Billingsley (1602/3–1645/6). Son of Sir Henry Billingsley (2) and Mary Killigrew. - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  4. (4) Colonel Henry Billingsley (1620–1657). Son of Lt Col Henry Billingsley (3) and Sarah Rogers. Brother of Sarah (will of 1651). - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  5. (5) Henry Billingsley (c1595–aft 1639). Grandson of Sir Henry Billingsley (1) by William Billingsley and Blanch Gunter. Married sister of Edward Collins, his partner in 1630s "supplying gunpowder to the East India Company." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  6. (6) Henry Billingsley (c1601–1652). Grandson of Sir Henry Billingsley (1) by Thomas Billingsley and Elizabeth Hinde. Died "unmarried in Hedsor, Buckinghamshire. His will reveals that he had no family of his own." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  7. (7) Henry Billingsley (1576–?). Grandson of William Billingsley & Elizabeth Harlowe by Richard Billingsley (mother not known). - note - this Henry is who Luke thinks is best match for Henry m Agatha Houtmans - Billingsley-346
  8. (8) Henry Billingsley (c1565–bet. 1638 & 1651), a draper by trade. Grandson of William Billingsley & Elizabeth Harlowe by William Billingsley and Elizabeth Tuthill. Married Abigail Thompson after July 1596 and they had three sons by 1629. She was sister of Emmanuel Thompson, "one of the victims at Amboyna." Two of their sons were Thomas Billingsley and William Billingsley ("married Sarah Pratt in 1622 aged 21"). "Henry was still alive in 1638 when he was listed as the guardian of William and Sarah’s young daughter Frances. [National Archives, C10/34/74]." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  9. (9) Henry Billingsley (1599–1603). Grandson of William Billingsley & Elizabeth Tuthill by Martin Billingsley and Elizabeth Balleyden. - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  10. (10) Harry Billingsley (1604–?1608). Grandson of William Billingsley & Elizabeth Tuthill by Martin Billingsley and Elizabeth Balleyden. "Either this Harry or the 1605 Henry died in 1608." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  11. (11) Henry Billingsley (1605–?1608). Grandson of William Billingsley & Elizabeth Tuthill by Martin Billingsley and Elizabeth Balleyden. "Either this Henry or the 1604 Harry died in 1608." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  12. (12) Henry Billingsley (April 1615–aft 1627). Grandson of a William Billingsley of Felmersham, Bedfordshire by Henry Billingsley ("not clear yet who this William and Henry are"). "This Henry is only known from the admission register for the Merchant Taylors School in the City of London", which he joined in 1627 and that included his birth as April 1615. - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  13. (13) Henry Billingsley (1625–?). "Son of Francis Billingsley of Astley Abbots and Eleanor Kerry. The fate of this Henry is not identified. One of his brothers, Edward, went to Ireland and it might be that this Henry is the same as Henry (15) below." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  14. (14) Captain Henry Billingsley (alive in 1642). "This Henry Billingsley was involved in the First Army Plot in May 1641 but it is not clear which Henry this was." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  15. (15) Henry Billingsley (?–1663). "A Henry Belleingsby, Esq., died in Dublin in 1663. This is almost certainly another Henry Billingsley but unfortunately the only evidence for this comes from a printed register of Irish Wills and Inventories and the original inventory for Henry was destroyed in the uprising in 1922 so it is not clear which Henry this was. It might be Henry 10, 11, 12 or 13, or even be a completely unidentified Henry." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
  16. (16) Henry Billingsley (c1630–?). "A Henry Billingsley was head of a family living at Petworth, Sussex, in the 1660s. Judging from the dates of birth of his children he would have been born around 1630. One of his daughters born at Petworth was a Barbara Billingsley. If this is the same Barbara who married Arthur Prior in Westminster in 1698, then this Petworth Henry can be identified as the Henry Billingsley who died in Clerkenwell, London, in 1704, and whose brother was Edward Billingsley who died at Great Stanmore in Middlesex in 1714." - no WikiTree profile found 9/25/2016
Luke Potter speculates that Henry (7), son of Richard, is probably the best choice for the Henry who married Agatha. Luke also speaks of "Henry of Middleburg" and explains:[2]
"The reference to Middleburg is significant. This was one of the ports used by the English company of Merchant Adventurers and suggests a connection to them. They were based at Middleburg until 1611, and then at Delft from 1611 until 1635 when they moved to Rotterdam where they remained until 1655."

William Billingsleys

Following originally compiled and posted on profile page for William m Elizabeth Harding/Harlowe (Billingsley-105). Copied to this page Sept. 26, 2016.

William Billingsleys

From the previous section are the following Williams (WikiTree IDs are listed because of a profile was attached for son/brother/father as described by Luke or the dates are a near/close match):
  • William Billingsley married Elizabeth Harlowe, parents of Sir Henry Billingsley (1), Lord Mayor of London, died 1606; Richard Billingsley (died before 1606, father of Henry (7) b 1576 named in Lord Mayor’s will); William m Elizabeth Tuthill (see next)
    • William (m Elizabeth Harlowe), born c1500 (+/-15), died 1558. [widow remarried in 1554[3]]
    • "William was a haberdasher in London and died (leaving a will) in 1558. The wider family of William is further revealed in the wills of his uncles Richard Billingsley of St Sepulchre, London, in 1540 and Ellis Draper, a haberdasher of London in 1533."[2]
    • Billingsley-105 (this profile, 1473-1553), Billingsley-151 (b 1500), Billingsley-61 (1473-1575), Shropshire
  • William Billingsley (son of William and Elizabeth Harlowe) married Elizabeth Tuthill, parents of Henry (8) b 1565 married Abigail Thompson c1596 (their son William married Sarah Pratt in 1622, his father was guardian of their daughter Frances in 1638); Martin Billingsley married Elizabeth Balleyden (three sons b 1599-1605, 2 died young, see Henry 9, 10, 11)
    • William (m Elizabeth Tuthill), born c1530s
    • none of the existing WikiTree profiles appear to be a good fit: Billingsley-151 (b 1500), Billingsley-65 (1505-1600) Shropshire [m Ciceleye Elizabeth Bows in 1524], Billingsley-258 (1505-1600) Shropshire
  • William Billingsley (son of Sir Henry Billingsley (1)) married Blanch Gunter, parents of Henry Billingsley (5) (c1595–aft 1639) who married Elizabeth, sister of Edward Collins. Edward was a survivor of the 1623 Amboyna massacre and in the 1630s was a partner with Henry in an East India Company business deal (see the Wikipedia article, Amboyna Massacre; victims were members of English East India Company).
    • William (m Blanch Gunter), born c1560s
    • no WikiTree profiles found (none for Blanch either, or Francis Gunther "of Aldburie, Com. Herts.", who Davis says is her father)
  • William Billingsley of Felmersham, Bedfordshire, son of Henry Billingsley (William's grandson Henry [12] born 1615)
  • William Billingsley of Felmersham (aka Billingesley, Billings, Bilinsey, Bilingsham depending on the clerk!) - a different William than the grandfather of Henry born 1615 (from a 2015 post by David Turner)
    • William Billingsley's children included Dorothy, 1600 christened in Harrold; Frances, 1604 in Stevington; Agnes, 1607 in Stevington ("which entry also gives mothers name as Mary"); Mary, 1610 in Felmersham; Elizabeth, 1613 in Felmersham.
    • "Felmersham is in a cluster of picturesque North Bedfordshire villages. ... I [David Turner] have not found any record of a Henry with any of the spellings above in any of these three parishes or nearby nor indeed any other male Billingsleys in the immediate area."
  • William Billingsley (son of Henry [8] and Abigail Thompson, m c1596) "married Sarah Pratt in 1622 aged 21"
    • William (m Sarah Pratt), born c1600, died before 1638 (assuming the 1638 listing of his father as guardian to William & Sarah's daughter Frances meant that he had died but perhaps it was this William who went to America, assigning guardianship before he did)
    • William (m Pratt) was the nephew of Emmanuel Thompson, "one of the victims at Amboyna." (See the Wikipedia article, Amboyna Massacre, 1623; victims were members of English East India Company.)

analysis - Quaker records may help resolve some issues. I think that John & Agatha Cooper are the Bridget Vernon connection, with the William who married Sarah Bowman their son, along with Francis Billingsley-74, and possibly Quakers. The John who married the daughter of William & Sarah Bowman from a different Billingsley family (not her 1st cousin, son of her uncle Francis Billingsley-74). I believe the Henry & Agatha Houtmans children in America (which includes John, who had sons John, Henry, and George) are not Quakers and the John Billingsley who married Sarah Ann Billingsley was from this family (or vice versa, with Sarah Ann Billingsley being a descendant of Henry B/Agatha Houtmans and her husband a Vernon desc.). If either of both were Quakers, then there should be something about their marriage in the Quaker records. ~ Noland-165 15:51, 25 September 2016 (EDT)

  • Norma Lundgren's Rootsweb tree, Francis Billingsley, which includes the following unsourced statement:
    • "1658-transported into MD from Virginia, Sarah Billingsley, widow of his brother, William."
  • Francis Billingsley, Descendants of Francis Billingsley, by Charles Massey, has Francis m Ann as father of John b 1647 in Rotterdam (died at sea, 1690), who married Sara Ann Billingsley, daughter of William & Sarah Bowman (with Francis and William brothers).
  • (Unsourced) Wikipedia: Francis Billingsley, from the Billingsley family of Astley Abbotts, Shropshire, who married Eleanor Kerry in 1616. Killed in 1646. Brother of Thomas and John. Children Francis and Edward (who served in Ireland). See Henry (13) above.

Other Billingsley names

Compiling Henrys & Williams seemed to help, so...
Lots of John & Francis Billingsleys. And a few Thomas and Samuel Billingsleys. My interest is Walter Billingsley (I have two - a lineal maternal ancestor and the guardian of my paternal ancestor Pearce Noland). Had to go past 1650s to find WikiTree profiles for Billingsleys with given name of Walter, Samuel, & James. ~ Noland-165 12:10, 26 September 2016 (EDT)

Relationships

Davis has many statements about relationships, some contradictory and most not specific about which Billingsleys are being cited (e.g., Thomas names cousins in a will, then later Davis links the same names as the cousins as all brothers, with Thomas). In addition, many sites, including WikiTree, present information that may cover multiple Billingsleys with the same given name as all for the one (e.g., Billingsley-74).
This section is an attempt to identify which Billingsleys are being named in cited documents, as well as attempting to confirm/collaborate the wording attributed to them.

Working Outline

based on information/discussions above, the following is the first attempt at a working outline for the Billingsleys.

Wyllym de Byllyngsleye Kings Clerk to King Edward I

|Son John (1)
| John's son John (2)
  • |Stephen Billingsley (1) remained in Hallon Shrop (ancestor of Sir Francis)
  • |William Bellingsley went to Cantebury Cathedral, then to a living in Lincoln (ancestor of...? Roger? or did brother Roger join William in Cantebury before leaving for London)
  • |Roger Billingsley (1) went to London (ancestor of Sir Henry, Lord Mayor of London)

Roger Billingsley (1)

Stephen Billingsley (1)

Brashears

See Research Notes added to Martha, dau. of Mary & Benjamin/Benoit (added 18 March 2022). The following comment posted to John Brasseur (abt.1650-abt.1713) ties them in with the Billingsleys/Chuckatuck Parish:

Cavaliers & Pioneers lists a John Brasseiur as receiving 37 acres in Chuckatuck Parish on 24 April 1700 for transporting one person (i.e., himself). ~ Nell Marion Nugent, C&P, volume III (1695-1732), page 36.

I encountered this family while researching the sons of John Billingsley, who married Elizabeth - possibly born Corbreath (primarily their son John). Their son George left a will probated in Calvert County that called him "of Upper Norfolk Co., VA", and George and Henry were granted land in Chuckatuck Parish in 1671.

The abstract of George's will in Baldwin's Maryland calendar of wills (page 149; 157 of 292) lists John Cobreath as a legatee & "Test: Jno. Brassieur, Jno. Carter, Jas. Sumner, Henry Mills."

Not sure of how Thomas Paget of Calvert County may be connected to this family, but the abstract of his 1677 will (page 194; 202 of 292) has several familiar names:

"Overseers: Capt. John Cobreath, Capt. Bourne, Francis Billingsley, Jno. Hunt.
"Test: Robt. Brasseur, Wm. Wallace."

Hi Marianne! I've added you as a manager. Sorry about the messiness - this started out as a workspace for me, but I got sidetracked a few years back & it languished. You've rekindled my enthusiasm for unearthing more info. Check out the newly added #Maryland Will Abstracts!
