Background

This free-space page (Steve Adey analysis of Adey Family Tree on Will of Jehovah website) is an analysis of the ADEY Family Tree [1] pages, in the collection of family trees on the WillOfJehovah.com website (created by Ward Green, 2013).

The entries are generally unsourced or poorly sourced, so this ADEY research page is a first step towards identifying which extra Adey related entries should become profiles on WikiTree. It will determine which persons (documented on the "Will of Jehovah" website) already have a WikiTree profile, and how well they are sourced. There is also an important website for Newfoundland Genealogy,[2] which needs investigating further. A second free-space page ( [[Space:]]will also be researched, that analyses another website containing the genealogy of a large number of Adey individuals, probably produced using the Newfoundland Grand Banks (NGB) transcripts.

It is also intended to investigate whether members of the "ADEY Family" emigrated from the Christchurch and Ringwood area of Hampshire, England to the Newfoundland Colony in North America during the 18th & 19th century. And in particular, who founded the small settlement of Adeytown, Newfoundland Colony.

Research Notes

Examination of the biography for William Adey revealed that there were only two sources given. Both are chiefly family tree sites, so they need special assessment, and only the earliest generations of the trees were in Hampshire.

  1. WillOfJehovah.com [3] is a Morman website for Ward Green, that appears to try and establish his descent from Adam. The Hampshire William Adey link leads to a page that tries to show 10 generations of great-grand parents on a single page. However, there are enough ADEYs named and dated on the page to make it interesting, even if its organisation makes it hard to read, so I extracted the key information. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to provide easy to identify sources that meet modern genealogical standards of evidence. The research strategy will be to try and identify valid sources, that either corroborate or invalidate the dates and relationships provided. Where there is no evidence found, it is proposed to use the WikiTree {{Uncertain Existence}} tag to document any uncertain WikiTree profiles. See my initial analysis on this free-space page.
  2. TurnbullClan.net[4] is a more modern style website for Brian and Gail Turnbull's family tree, that was created using John Cardinal's GedSite version 4.02. It is being analysed in the following WikTree page: Space:Steve Adey analysis of Adey Family on Turnbull Clan website
  3. The true sources for both the above "Family Tree" websites are in Newfoundland, Canada. I have started my own "ADEY One-Name Name Study" for Newfoundland in the following WikiTree page: Space:ADEY research notes, Newfoundland Colony.

Analysis of ADEYs on 10 generations of gg-parents chart

Any analysis could be based on a simple Genealogical Numbering System [5] [6] [7] of descendants from the earliest proposed ADEY ancestor, to avoid trying to cram all ancestors and their descendants onto the same graphical chart.

An alternative anaysis strategy, that I developed to analyse the Newfoundland ADEYs (and propose to extend to the Hamshire/Dorset ADEYs), is to create a timeline analysis based on the birth date of each ADEY male & each (LNAB) ADEY female. It may also need to contain the date of all ADEY marriages, as they mark the creation of a 'new' ADEY female.

Family Names

It would be interesting to determine the frequency of each spelling, and whether they are all derived from the same source or whether there are several different sources (lines of descent within documented history).

  • Addy
    • "Homes of Family Names in Great Britain", by Henry Brougham Guppy, 1890, p. 422. A name peculiar to W. Yorkshire.
NOTE: I doubt this is substantiated!
  • Addye
  • Ade
  • Adee
  • Adey
    • Family Tradition: Adey from Bristol [ed. Bisterne, Ringwood] settled first at Hant's Harbour, then at Hickman's Harbour.
  • Eddy
    • "Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland": by Edgar Ronald Seary, McGill-Queen's University Press, Canada 1998, p. 163. Eddy: See also Eady, Adams, Ade, Adey.
NOTE: It is doubtful that Adams could derive from the same family surnames (in recent times).

As communities were becoming established in the early or middle part of the 1700s, Hant's Harbour was being hailed primarily as a fishing post, and is not mentioned in the mid-1700s in the records of the minister, Mr. Balfour of Trinity, with the larger towns of Scilly Cove (Winterton today), Old Perlican, New Perlican, and Heart's Content.
