Welcome to the Northumberland Team page!

Team Leader: Marjorie Gibbon

Team Members: Karen Anderson | Jutta Beer | Pamela Lohbeck | William Maher | Terry Phillips | David Pickard

Goal

The goal of the Northumberland Team is to make all Northumberland profiles the best that they can be. It is our desire to leave a lasting legacy of work for future generations and current researchers that can facilitate their quest for family history, and bring them one step closer to discovering the myriad of people it has taken for them to draw breath.

If you are interested in helping with Northumberland, please feel free to look at the England Project page and sign up via the G2G post. If you have any questions about Northumberland and the County Team, please contact the team leader, Marjorie Gibbon.

Tasks

To achieve our goal, these are some of the things we work on:

  • Work on the Northumberland Suggestions (NB please ignore Wikidata suggestions),
  • Find sources for some of the Northumberland Unsourced Profiles
  • There are families in Northumberland who are not connected to the main WikiTree, can you make the link?
  • As of 12th July 2023 there are 546 19th Century profiles connected with Northumberland (by marriage or death location) that don't have a birth location. Some of them have their birth location mentioned in their biography, but others require some searching for sources and perhaps a bit of tlc.
  • There are a lot of profiles related to Northumberland who have 'unknown' in one of their name fields - we are trying to find out what they were really called.
  • Work on the profiles in the Northumberland Maintenance Categories,
  • Have a go breaking down one of the Northumberland Family Brick Walls,
  • There is a Northumberland, Notables category, and there must be lots of notable Northumbrians who don't have a profile yet! What does Wikitree count as notable? Generally the same guidelines as Wikipaedia, more information on the Notables project. Alternatively, perhaps you can imporve the profile of a notable who is already on Wikitree?
  • Research and update profiles on WikiTree relevant to prominent Northumberland families,
  • Maintain the Northumberland Research Resources page,
  • Any other ideas ...

Remember we will largely be working in the context of profiles that are managed by other people. Always endeavour to discuss any major changes you may wish to make to a profile with the profile manager/s involved.

Lots of these activities are the focus of teams within the England Project, more information and how to get involved at England Profile Improvements Team.

Team Member Specific Interests

  • Jutta My surname interests are Armstrong, Clarke, Coulthard, Pigg, Stagg, Snowball, Todd, Turpin & Wailes, particularly from Hexham, Haydon Bridge, Warden & Haltwhistle. But I really enjoy just finding out about people.
  • Karen My surname interests are: Anderson, Brown, Harrison and Dixon. So far, many of the ancestors I have found were from Newcastle Upon Tyne so I am interested in that are but overall I enjoy making connections, whether they are related or not.
  • Pamela: I am particularly interested in medieval Northumberland history. Researching pre-1500 unsourced profiles and completing those biographies restores life to this historical period, one person at a time.
  • Marjorie - I really enjoyed watching the BBC's 'A House Through Time', featuring 5 Ravensworth Terrace, Newcastle - I have been working on a page about the house and a profile for as many residents as possible. Many of the profiles would benefit from a bit of tlc ... please feel free if you would like to add to any of them.
  • Marjorie - Everyone in Northumberland believes they are related to Grace Darling, I know, but I really want to find our link ;)

Things we could have a go at!

  • All the plaques commemorating people who have lived in or visited or had some link to a building in Northumberland - according to https://openplaques.org/places/gb there are 191 plaques in Newcastle upon Tyne, nine in Alnwick, seven in Hexham, four in Morpeth, and more ... I will start this at some point. Presumably there will be some overlap with the Northumberland, Notables category, Marjorie 16:19, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Team Challenges

There is usually a challenge going on on Wikitree! Sometimes they are international challenges - members of the England Project, and England Counties teams, are encouraged to join the Mighty Oaks team and participate from time to time in WikiTree challenges for England.

Northumberland Stats

Have a look at the Northumberland tables on the England Statistics Page to see how all of the counties, and the country as a whole, are doing with sourcing, connecting and suggestions, every week. Here's an annual roundup of how Northumberland is doing:

We've more than doubled the number of Northumberland profiles since I first added the numbers to the team page in September 2019 - there are now 50811 Northumberland profiles! Well done everyone!!

(Don't mention that there have been a couple of changes to how they are counted - one reduced the number and the other increased it 😉)

Well done Northumberland Team, we added sources to profiles of 141 Northumbrians last week with the sourceathon - at the same time as increasing the total number of Northumberland profiles by 485!  :)
Marjorie, will you add the following specific interests to my Team Members Interests.

Connecting the Northumbrian families of Northumberland, including Hedley, Widdrington, Clavering, Brown, Swinbourne, Deleval, Marley but a few. Also reducing the Northumberland Stats and just adding to the profiles

Last month we were helped by the way the numbers are calculated so I didn't comment on the amazing drops in unsourced profiles and database suggestions in Northumberland, but this month we've got more big drops - well done Northumberland team! I don't know why the number of unconnected profiles keeps going up, seems to be going up pretty much everywhere regardless of the huge amounts of effort to make connections, but the consolation is that the total number of profiles is going up faster :) Yay!
Congratulations to Northumberland team member Pamela Lohbeck on achieving pre-1500 certification!
Thank-you so much to the team for crafting this page. Northumberland rocks!:)

Hi, me saying hello, I have recently taken on the role of team leader for Northumberland. I grew up in Newcastle and have many ancestors from Northumberland (and County Durham). Finding Wikitree, about a year ago, got me back into family history after a long pause. I got onto the England Project's Orphan Trail pretty quickly, a great way to learn about sources, bios, etc - I would really recommend it. I am keen to help improve our tree where I can; I have dabbled in sourcery and data doctoring, when I have time. Recently I have been working on (mostly) Northumberland profiles as part of England's Gedcom team. I look forward to working with you all to make the Northumberland profiles the best they can be :-) - please do get in touch if you have any ideas / comments / questions, BW Marjorie
Hi Daniel,

Once you have completed the Orphan Trail, we can get you settled in this team :)

Looking forward to seeing you in here :)

Janet we are adding CIB's to all the places, which then moves them to the main category page. This is ongoing and a lot of work for our Categories Team :)

If you check one from the main page and one from the places page you will see the difference :) Eventually all will be on one page throughout each county :)

Thanks for pointing this out though as people may not have known and been concerned :)

Hi Guys,

There seems to be a lot of places on the Northumberland page rather than in the category for Northumberland Places. Is there a reason for this?
