About the Project

The Geisinger Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Geisinger name and several variants of the name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Geisinger name.

This project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. The project tries to research different branches in different regions and where possible identify the connections and migration roots. Individual studies on specific topics are listed in the research pages section, please let Alexandra-Brigitte Scholz know, when you have additional ongoing researches or include them in the list of the research pages.

Origin of the Name Geisinger (Geissinger/Geißinger)

Different possible origins of the name Geisinger exist. These possible origins exist side by side. So there is no expectation of a single origin. For the mentioned origns the proof is added as the project evolves:

  • The meaning of the name is topynomic, identifiying a person coming from Geising. Geising is a part of Altenberg in Saxony, Germany. It is situated close to the border with the Czech Republic, 13 km (8.1 mi) north of Teplice, and 32 km (20 mi) south of Dresden. Prior to 2011 it was an independent town. [1]
  • The meaning of the name is topynomic, identifiying a person coming from Geisingen. Geisingen is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is situated 13 km southwest of Tuttlingen, and 21 km southeast of Villingen-Schwenningen, about 20 km from the Swiss border.[2]
Per remarks in the book "Die Miller von und zu Aichholz" of Franz Xaver Wöber a highborn family of the Fürstenberger Line is calling themself "von Geisingen". They are mentioned in documents in 1095 (Bertholdus de Gisingen, Conradus de Gisingen), in 1249 (Konrad von Geisingen, Berthold von Geisingen). Franz Xaver Wöber questiones the relationship to an civic family "Geisinger" mentioned in Zurich, Switzerland in 1378.[3]
Note: These two towns above, Geising and Geisingen, exist 565 km apart from each other. There is no obvious connection between these places.
  • The meaning of the name is patronymic, identifying a descendance to a father with the old german name Giselo/Giso.[4]
  • In some regions the names "'Geisinger"' and '"Geissinger"' are variants from the names "'Gisinger"' and '"Giesinger"'. This is a conclusion of the subproject Gisinger and Geisinger in Götzis of this One Name Study.

Related Surnames and Surname Variants

Prior the 19th century the spelling of surnames in the German regions were not fixed. Since many people were not capable to write or read, they could not tell how their name was spelled. The priest who typically kept the records would write the names down as he heard and understood them. So when people moved from one parish to another, the spelling of their name might have changed. Also the spelling might have changed, when the priest was replace by another priest.

The ending "inger" (in German) indicates that someone comes from a place or household and is pretty stable used in the southern German region. The rest of the name can have multiple writings based on the vowel's sound or consonant's sound in the spoken word in different regional dialects: a "G" could also be a "K" or seldom a "C". The vowel "ei" could also be written as "ai", "ey", "ay", "eu" and seldom as "uy"("ui") or "ej". The consonant "s" could be "ß", "ss", "z", "sz" and "zs". These option generate many name variants (see Table below).
Table 1: Possible Surname Variants. Bold: Profiles exist in WikiTree for this variant (as of 29JN21). Red: Total Civil records in FamilySearch.org (as of 29JN21).

Conclusions from the data snap-shot above:

(1) The most use form is "Geisinger". Followed by Geissinger.
(2) The "e" variant is an own name and no variant: Kessinger / Gessinger / Kesinger / Gesinger
(3) The "zs" or "sz" variants are more likely misreadings or mispellings.
(4) Need a detailed research on the origin of Guysinger/Guisinger, it could be a variant through migration or an own name.
(5) Need a detailed research on the origin of Kaisinger / Kaizinger / Keisinger / Kaysinger, it could be a variant through migration or an own name.

Other similar names are for example Greisinger, Geilinger, Geistlinger. They can be misspelling or a misreading or the name "Geisinger", but generally they are seperate names, and not part of this name study.

Above the variants from "ei" to "e" are looked at. There is also the variants to "i" or "ie", and "a" e.g. Gisinger, Gissinger, Giesinger, Giessinger, Kissinger, Kiesinger, Gasinger, Gassinger. These names can be a variants of "Geisinger" as well as a own names. Also Geisinger can be a variant of such a name. The study will be open to connect lines of these names, if proof is found that a family line connects to an original Geisinger/Geissinger name or transforms to a Geisinger/Geissinger.

Geisinger or Geißinger or Geissinger

In Germany surnames were fixed to their spelling when the civil records were started. This is in some places as early as 1800, in other places as late as 1875. Looking at civil records, there must have been some kind of "debate" in families whether the name is written with single "s" or with double "ss" or "ß". For example this Johann Christian Geisinger (1885-1945) had his birth record corrected from "Geissinger" to "Geisinger". It did not help, on his grave the name is written with "ss" again. All his descendants are written with the single "s", while most of his ancestors are written as Geisinger and Geißinger in their times.

Name Correction in 1942: "Geissinger" to "Geisinger"
Grave Johann Christian Geisinger, surname spelled out as "Geissinger"
Examples of different spellings for the same person in earlier times

In Germany all three spellings "Geisinger", "Geißinger" and "Geissinger" continue to exist. The last two are very difficult to differentiate in global databases as www.familysearch.org, www.ancestry.com, www.myheritage.com or even in the German telephone directory, since typically searches do not differentiate between the "ß" and the "ss" spelling, even when an "exact" search is execute.

A question which raises on the use of the "ss" versus the "ß" is the following: Are the origins of the "Geissinger" name lines really disconnected to the "Geisinger"/"Geißinger" name line ? Or is this "ss" / "ß" only a regional spelling ? One of the conclusions of the subproject Geißinger in Großsachsen, Leutershausen and Schriesheim is, that for this region and time all spellings have been used in parallel, so no differentiation on the lines with different spellings could be identified. Similar are the findings in the differentiation of spellings in the subproject Gisinger and Geisinger in Götzis. So at least for Germany it can be said, that most of these differences in spellings within one family disappear with the appearance of civil records in the 19th century.

Regional Distribution

Counting purely available data[49] of the Birth&Baptism, Marriage and Death records available at www.familysearch.org there are two major clusters: Germany and United States where the Name Geisinger and Geißinger (Geissinger) appears.

Table 2: Counts of Records at Familysearch for Birth&Baptism (*), Marriage (oo) and Death (+), data collected on June 17th, 2021

This is only looking on the regional distribution. It might make sense to connect the distribution also to time/century.

The distribution in WikiTree itself can be seen using Wikitree+: Report on Categories in WikiTree+ (Click on "Navigate Categories" to see results)

[top]

Germany

Filtering the data[49] down to the German states (see Table 3), the main clusters are Württemberg, Baden and Bavaria. These states are all located in south of Germany.

Table 3: Counts of Records specific for Germany

At a first conclusion, the name seems to orignate from the Baden-Württemberg region in southern Germany.

[top]

United States

Filtering the data[49] down to the US states (see Table 4), two very big clusters are found in Ohio and Pennsylvania, followed by clusters are California, Wisconsin (including Wisconsin Territory), Iowa, Minnesota and New York/New Jersey. Note, states with less then 50 totals, have been omitted.

Table 4: Counts of Records specific for Unites States (only states >50 occurences)

Looking at a map of German-Born Population in 1872 the main clusters are found to be in regions with high German population: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin. So the assumption is near that the Geisinger/Geissinger population in the USA is descendants of Geisinger/Geissinger immigrants from Germany to the US. It will be one piece of the study to look at this migration. [50][51]

[top]

Rest of Europe

Filtering the data[49] down to the other states of Europe (see Table 5), there are the following interesting clusters:

  • Hungary
  • France
  • Great Britain and Ireland
  • Austria
  • Poland

The opening question will be if it is possible to prove that these are German immigrants from original German location.

Hello. I added the profiles above under the Ohio Category. I have not created the Ohio category yet. Are you planning to research the Origin of both in Ohio ? Then I would create the category, such that it can be added to the profiles. Thanks for making me aware of that line.
Meanwhile the OHIO category is created and can be used: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Ohio%2C_Geisinger_Name_Study

And already 33 profiles were tagged in OHIO for Geisinger/Geissinger names. So if you run in some more, please tag them to the category or let me know, so I can do it :-)
