Miles Smythe allegedly born in 1520 in Herefordshire, England. [1]
No primary birth records or sources have been located for Miles Smythe, b. 1520 in Herefordshire. It is likely he never existed as portrayed.
Research Notes
The originating tree from which this profile was created is disputed. The Gedcom file was uploaded to Wiki Tree in 2011 but was not verified prior to upload. [1] Alleged parents: John Smythe of Corsham, Wiltshire, England, and a falsely attributed spouse Alice Townhende. There were also several siblings attributed to this same 'mythical' marriage, since disproven. There are no direct or secondary sources listed for Miles Smythe, b. 1520, Herefordshire, in this tree.
This individual, with no sourced birth, is also attributed on ancestry.com to a father named William, unverified; and, he is on NUMEROUS trees w/various fathers named John, incl. John of Corsham and his legitimate wife Joan Brounker, or, for example, as a son of John Smythe High Sheriff of Essex and mother Lady Alice (Hayden) Townhende (1478-1579) w/spouse Lady Rose Goddard (1535-1615), their son Capt. Roger Smith (1587–1629), Immigrant to Jamestown. Both are patently false. [2]
He is seen with various death dates such as 1535, 13 Apr 1591 Southwark, Surrey, 1555 Bristol, 1560 Ludlow, Shropshire, 1578 Worcester, or 1624, Surrey, or no death date. These entries alone demonstrate that there were, at minimum, seven different men, likely more, of the same name assigned to the unverified persona of Miles Smythe allegedly b. 1520 Hereford.
Additional research:
Miles Smythe (incl. variations) is not recorded among Smythes in the Visitation of Herefordshire, 1569. [3]
There are christening records for children of Miles Smythe of Kingston upon Thames, Surrey ( loc. abt 41 miles crows flight from Hereford) in the 1540s but no artifacts have been located that tie this Miles Smythe of Surrey to Smythe allegedly b. Hereford.
A marriage record referencing a Miles Smithe who wed in 1602 at St. Peter, Hereford seemingly belongs to a much younger man, one born after the 1569 Visitation. This man's wife was born 1582, bap. Hereford, and died in Shropshire in 1618. No death record for this Miles has yet been located, hampering tracebacks.
Miles Smith* (d. 1614), Bishop of Gloucester, son of a[n unnamed] Hereford butcher, is not referenced in said trees, but was b. after 1520, so is not under consideration. Nor is his cousin, also named Miles Smith* who was a Glouchester clergyman who had a son named Miles - although specific birthdates are not evidenced, given the documentation, all three men would be too young to be candidates. (*standardized). [4]
