No record has been found of the birth of Thomas Smithson or his arrival in Maryland. The father currently given in his profile has not been proven. It is possible he is related somehow to the two men of the same name who lived in Dorchester County and Talbot County in the late 1600s. Thomas Smithson of Dorchester County died in 1695 and his son, Col. Thomas Smithson of Talbot County wrote his will in 1713 and was deceased by 9 APR 1714. The will of Col. Smithson mentions a wife named Mary and several sisters living in Yorkshire, England, but no children are mentioned.[1] The Thomas Smithson of this profile was a father by 1706 so it is unlikely he was the son of Col. Thomas of Talbot County. He was probably born in England around 1680 and emigrated to Maryland because he had relatives already living there.
Thomas Smithson was married to Ann Scott around 1703. The births of the eight children of Thomas and Ann Smithson are all recorded together in the register of St. John's Parish between 1704 and 1720:
On 13 JAN 1719 a 100 acre parcel, part of a one thousand acre tract called "Beal's Camp" located on the Bush River in today's Harford County, was conveyed to Thomas Smithson. [3] Thomas's brother-in-law, Daniel Scott Jr., earlier purchased a part of "Beal's Camp" on 30 AUG 1714. [4]
Thomas Smithson signed his will on 11 AUG 1731 and left his entire estate to his wife, Ann Smithson during her natural life provided she did not waste the timber growing on the land. After her decease the land to be equally divided between his two sons, Thomas Smithson & Daniel Smithson. His personal estate to be equally divided between the two sons and the two youngest daughters, Sarah Smithson and Avarilla Smithson. Thomas also mentioned that none of his four daughters should have any part of the estate more than what had already been given them. He then listed his daughters and their husbands:
The will was signed with his mark and witnessed by Daniel Scott, Daniel Scott Jr., Richard Rhoads and Richard Rhoads Jr. It was presented to the court on 8 MAR 1732.[5]
