death date

There are two different death dates give for a Sidney R. Smith The first one is July of 1922; the second one is December of 1923. Both are in MN--one in Todd County and the other in Meeker County. After finding out that the Sidney in this posting had a nephew that was born about 1848 with the exact same name--I believe that Sidney, the wife of Esther Allen, died in July of 1922. He had been living in Todd County for quite a few years and it doesn't seem feasible that he would have died in Meeker County.
***** Doug Smith tried to post photos here (July 3,2016) of Smith Monuments at Osakis' Lakeside Cemetery, Douglas County, Minnesota - no success - provided by Jane and Kevin Schmid - See Gallery Photo - See their notes on photos:
These are close-ups of the stones behind the large family monument “Smith.” Ron said the marker for Mott since it is flat on the ground doesn’t show up? Was there a Mott Smith? He/she was born in 1861 and died in 1891 – a short life.
What about Rachel? The marker is broken and I believe that when that happens the cemetery volunteers salvage as much as they can to preserve the information and grave location. Ron says that Esther is your great great great grandmother – that’s a lot of greats!
Jane
[Ron write your notes to Kevin here…]
We found Esther in Osakis, beautiful spot and I will call about Miranda Stevens. There is a Myra Stevens?? Jane saw the marker. Mike Didier is the administrator of Lakeside Cemetery (320-859-4673).
Ron
I thought Mott was a rather uncommon name so with the help of Google:
“When naming your baby Mott, it's important to consider the gender of the name itself. When people look at the name Mott, they might ask the question, "is Mott a man or a woman?", or "what is the gender of the name Mott?" Some names are more gender neutral than others, and some names are more strongly associated with either males or females. Some spelling variations of the name Mott might be more popular than others. The Baby Name Guesser can answer all these questions about the name Mott. To find out more about Mott, Baby Name Guesser uses up-to-date data from across the Internet on how the name Mott is actually used.”

From Jeff Gilbank:
Sydney marries Mary Esther Allen (Blair) of Georgia, Vermont (born in Upper Canada) in 1847 in Willsboro, Essex Co, New York.
From Kevin Schmid:
Sidney R. Smith was the 2nd husband of my GGGgrandmother, Esther Allen. Esther had a son by Horace Porter Blair in Addison, Vermont and moved to Willsburo, Essex, New York. The story was that Horace died before this happen (He lived in Georgia, Franklin, Vermont until 1875). Anyway, Sidney Smith and Esther Allen married on July 27, 1847 in Willsboro, New York. I believe that the information on Sidney in the civil war is correct (information matched a genealogical history of Todd county, Minnesota book). After the civil war they moved to Minnesota along with my GGgrandfather, Horace E. Blair and settled in Todd county, MN. Sidney settled on a farm in Reynolds, township, Todd county, MN. Part of that property is now the Reynolds Baptist church. I also had information about Sidney living in Walla Walla, WA. He returned to Minnesota. his wife Esther died on 8/26/1896 in Little Sauk township. Sidney died on 7/29/1922 at his son George's home in Long Prairie, Todd county, MN. He supposedly is buried in Clarissa, MN (a near-by community). Sidney and Esther had 5 kids, Emma, Annette, George A., Frank, and Elbert.
Sidney's farm would have been near county highway 11 just south of the business area known as Gutches Grove. In 1959, there was a general store, feed store, restaurant, and a few houses there. Burial in Clotho (sic) means that he was buried several miles from his farmstead.

This battalion, commanded by Maj. Geo. W. Smith, was mustered out and honorably discharged September 30, 1865, at Memphis, Tenn.
The regiment, during its service, lost by death, killed in action, 10 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 1 officer, 14 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 3 officers, 319 enlisted men;, total, 4 officers, 341 enlisted men; aggregate, 345; of whom 8 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy. The large number reported drowned is due principally to the foundering of the steamer North America off the coast of Florida, December 22, 1864.
In 1866, Union Veterans of the Civil War organized into the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and became a social and political force that would control the destiny of the nation for more than six decades. Membership in the veterans' organization was restricted to individuals who had served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War, thereby limiting the life span of the GAR. The GAR existed until 1956.
From Jeff Gilbank: There is a record that shows, following the war, Sydney's daughter, Annette, was married in 1868 in Round Prairie, Todd, Minnesota.
From The History of Todd County: The articles were published weekly in the Long Prairie Leader (weekly newspaper). The articles are a series of memories from a number of sources and are subject to some inaccuracies. In there, it is mentioned that Sidney blacksmithed in Walla Walla but with no dates. Sidney was in the 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 census in Todd county. The Long Prairie mentioned that Sidney was born in Brockville, ONT and Estther was born in Trois Riveres. Exerpts from the article in it's fullest form are below:
"On January 29, 1826 at Brockville, Ontario, was born Sidney R. Smith of English parentage..."
