Biography
Edmund Smith is a part of US Black heritage.
Edmund (also spelled Edmond) was born about 1809 and was enslaved by Mary (Webb) Smith in Granville County, North Carolina, at the Abram's Plains plantation.
When Mary's will was probated in February 1828, Edmund was given to her son John Granville Smith. In the estate inventory, Edmund was listed with a "supposed age" of 19 years old.
John died in October 1828 and his estate inventory was recorded in February 1829. Edmond was valued at $350.
John's will stated "I Give and Bequeath to my two living Brothers James W Smith & Maurice Smith all the residue of my estate not already disposed of." Presumably this means that Edmond was inherited jointly by James Webb Smith and Maurice Smith.
