James Smith is Notable.

James was one of the first black dentists in the United States. He established a successful practice in Little Rock, Arkansas, treating both black and white patients.

James was born about 1843 to free African American parents in Camden, Delaware . He became a dentist and had a practice in Chicago that was destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1879. He moved to Arkansas and eventually opened a practice in Little Rock, Arkansas. He married a musical elementary school teacher named Florence Irene Gulliver in her hometown, Indianapolis, Indiana.

They had three children: Charles, Gertrude, and the youngest Florence Beatrice. - - - At the time Dr. Smith married Florence Gulliver, he was one of a dozen or so black dentists in the country.

- - - He was born in 1843 of free parents in Camden, Delaware and had grown up in New Jersey. [1]

Despite the difficulties of acquiring education and training in the field of Dentistry, Dr. James H Smith, was able to establish a successful practice in Little Rock. He had both blacks and white among his patients, including a former governor of Arkansas. " Historical Memoirs ---" cited below.
