Mary Frances Sherman was born on 28 February 1855 in Crawford, Arkansas, United States, daughter of William Sherman (1811–1866) and Cynthia Ann Fultz (~1815–1880).

Mary (23) married George Washington Barker (21) (born on 14 February 1857 in Arkansas, United States; son of Martin Barker and Mary Ann (Hargrove) Barker) on 22 December 1878 in Crawford, Arkansas, United States.[3] [4] Their children were:
