The son of Peter Shafer and Estella Bates, Harry was born in Centerville in 1887.[1] He married Cora May Sewards (1891-1967), the daughter of Ben Sewards and Mary Mae "Mamie" Standard, in Union Township on July 5, 1908.[2] Their children included:

Henry was a farmer, and he first worked as a farm laborer in Brady Township, in Kalamazoo County;[3] by 1920, Harry had acquired government in Casco Township, Michigan, in Allegan County, and they operated a fruit farm there.[4] In 1930, they were farming their own land in Porter Township, in Cass County.[5][6]
Harry passed away in Kalamazoo at the age of 97[7] and was buried in Constantine Township on April 18, 1944.[8]
