Biography

Jemima Seamons was born on December 15, 1838 in South Elmham, Suffolk, England. Her parents were Henry Seamons and Mary King. Jemima was the fifth of eight children, and the fourth daughter. The family lived in the small farming country village of All Saints, Suffolk, County, England.

When Jemima was about 12 years old, missionaries representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) visited Suffolk and the family joined the church. Jemima was baptized on 25 October 1852, by Elder Robert Winters, and confirmed the same day. She was nearly 14 years old at the time. Four years later, the family immigrated to America, setting sail on 14 February 1856, on the sailing vessel Caravan and were six weeks making the voyage to New York. Jemima was sick almost the entire voyage. They landed in New York on 27 March 1856, without any money. They stayed in order to earn enough to help them continue on their journey. [1] She was hired to work in the home of a Mr. Hollenbeck, not realizing that he lived in New Jersey. After some time, Jemima was able to find employment for her father, brothers and sisters in the area and soon they were back together, with the exception of her sister, Lucy, who had married and moved to Iowa. Jemima would not see Lucy again for another 40 years.

When they had saved enough money, the family moved to Winter Quarters, and then the frontier. It was there that Jemima met her future husband, Robert. They were married on 1 May 1859. Together they had 12 children:

  1. Caroline Daines
  2. William Daines
  3. Robert Daines
  4. Charlie Daines
  5. James Daines
  6. Joseph Daines
  7. Mary Daines
  8. Lydia Daines
  9. Harriet Daines
  10. George Daines
  11. Franklin Daines
  12. Lyman Daines

On 19 July 1859, Robert and Jemima joined the company of Feramorz Little to make the journey to Utah. In a company of nine men, she was one of two women. They cooked and clean, and when Robert became very ill, Jemima took over as the drover. They arrived in Salt Lake City on 9 October 1859.[1]

Jemima died at the age of 70 on January 05, 1908 in Logan, Cache, Utah, USA. She is buried in the Hyde Park Cemetery, in Hyde Park, Cache County, Utah.
