Biography

Peter Schmitt migrated from Germany to United States of America.

Johann Schmitt emigrated from Prussia with his wife Maria nee Winter and their son Peter, they arrived at Port of New York on 21 April 1855, per Declaration of Intent, filed in Woodstock, McHenry County, Illinois [No ship name is recorded]. They were among the early settlers in Johnsburg (Est. August 1841), McHenry County, Illinois. Maria died in Johnsburg on 23 December 1863, John married 2. Magdalena nee Kaut on 7 July 1864 at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois. They moved to Minnesota sometime after the birth of their son Johann Joseph, born in Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois on 24 October 1870, his birth and baptism, on 26 October 1870, are recorded at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg.

Peter married Rosalia Maerz on October 7, 1879 in Leavenworth, Brown County, Minnesota. ^[1]

Peter died on 26 May 1897. "Husband of Rosalia Marz, Peter Schmitt passed away as the result of being dragged by runaway horses in 1897 leaving his wife and seven children."

Peter is buried in Japanese Martrys Cemetery in Leavenworth, Brown, Minnesota.

Place of Death: Peter is listed in the death records for Mulligan Township, Brown County, Minnesota, which is where he was a resident at the time of his death. However, based on the obituary reports, he appears to have died in Sleepy Eye shortly after the accident.
