Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph (Schelling) von Schelling wurde in Württemberg, Deutschland geboren.

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling[1] was a German philosopher. With Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, he established German idealism, which developed a new metaphysics as a result of Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Schelling was the main founder of Naturphilosophie, which influenced almost all fields of natural sciences in Germany from about 1800 to 1830. His philosophy of the unconscious had an influence on the emergence of psychoanalysis. Schelling's philosophy forms the crucial link both between Kantian and Hegelian philosophy and between idealism and post-idealism.[2]

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph was born in 1775 and baptized on 28 Jan 1775 in Leonberg. He was the son of Joseph Friedrich Schelling and Gottliebin Maria, née Cleß.[3]

After attending the Latin school in Nürtingen and the Protestant seminary school in Bebenhausen, Schelling was granted permission to enroll at the Tübinger Stift (seminary of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Württemberg) on 18 October 1790, at the age of 15, despite not having yet reached the normal enrollment age of 20. At the Stift, he shared a room with Hegel as well as Friedrich Hölderlin, and the three became good friends.[4]

Schelling's interest gradually shifted from Lutheran theology to philosophy. In 1792 he completed his master's thesis, and in 1795 he finished his doctoral thesis under Gottlob Christian Storr.[4] From 1796 to 1798, Schelling studied mathematics, natural sciences and medicine at the University of Leipzig, laying the foundations for his Naturphilosophie. During this time he visited his compatriot Friedrich Schiller in Jena and through him made the acquaintance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1796.[2] Meanwhile, he had begun to study Kant and Fichte, who influenced him greatly. On a visit to Dresden in 1797, Schelling met the brothers August Wilhelm Schlegel and Friedrich Schlegel and his future wife Caroline Schlegel (then married to August Wilhelm) as well as Novalis.[4]

In October 1798 Schelling became a professor extraordinarius of philosophy at the University of Jena. During his time at Jena, he was on close terms with Goethe and also had a close relationship with Hegel again. With Schelling's help, Hegel became an associate professor ("Privatdozent") at Jena University. Beginning in January 1802, Hegel and Schelling published Kritisches Journal der Philosophie as co-editors, publishing papers on Naturphilosophie, but Schelling was too busy to stay involved, and the edition work was essentially taken over by Hegel. The publication was discontinued in spring 1803, when Schelling moved from Jena to Würzburg.[4]

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph married first Dorothea Caroline Albertine Schlegel, née Michaelis, on 26 Jun 1803 in Murrhardt.[5]

From September 1803 to April 1806, Schelling was a professor at the new University of Würzburg. This period was marked by considerable flux in his views and by a final breach with Fichte and Hegel. In Würzburg, a conservative Catholic city, Schelling found many enemies among his colleagues and in the government. In 1806 Schelling moved to Munich, where he entered the Bavarian civil service and became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. He remained there until 1820.[2][4]

After Karoline had died in 1809, he married second Pauline Amalie Angelika Gotter (1786-1854) on 11 Jun 1812 in Gotha. They had the following children:[6]

  • Paul Heinrich Joseph (1813-1889), married Emilie Viktorine Regina Handschuh,
  • Karl Friedrich August (1815 - 20 Aug 1863),[7] married Emma von Gaisberg on 24 Aug 1847 in Ellhofen, Weinsberg, Württemberg,[8] alternate marriage location: Abstatt, Württemberg,[9] alternate marriage location: Auenstein, Württemberg,[10]
  • Clara Franzisca Albertine (1818-1857), married Georg Waitz on 9 Oct 1842 in Berlin,[11]
  • Julie Friederike Wilhelmine (1821-1885), married Carl Friedrich Herrmann Eichhorn (1813-1892) in 1843 in Berlin,[12]
  • Ludwig Hermann (1824-1908), married Marie Leonie Billing on 31 Mar 1857 in Bodelshausen, Württemberg.[13]

Schelling was ennobled in 1812.[14][15]

Without resigning his official position in Munich, he lectured at the University of Erlangen 1820-1827.[4] In 1841 he was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Berlin, succeeding Hegel. There Schelling taught primarily philosophy of religion. On May 31, 1842, he was awarded the Order Pour le Mérite for science and the arts in Berlin.[2] He stopped delivering public lectures in 1845.[4]

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling died on 20 Aug 1854 during a health-related stay in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland.[16][17][18]
