The Brittan Sanders Story
Written by: Bill Saunders Curry Feb 2, 2014
Brittan Sanders was born Sept 2nd, 1831 in Moore County, NC and was also my 2nd Great Grandfather. Although I could not find any records to show exactly where in Moore County he was born, Hardy his father was born and died in Moore County and ended up with 58 acres of land scattered around Moore County. Brittan lived in Moore County from 1831 to 1862 when the Civil War started; then again when he returned from the war, until he died in 1913.
First Marriage
June 26, 1851, he married Susannah “Susy” M. Morgan, daughter of John L. Morgan and Malinda Lucinda “Lindy” Richardson Maness. They were 19 at the time. Together they had one child, Sarah Sally Sanders born June 16th, 1852 in Moore County, NC. I haven’t found any evidence whether Susannah died giving child birth or a few months later, but we know she gave birth to Sarah June 16th, 1852 and died that same year.
Second Marriage
That same year, 1852, Brittan married Susannah’s sister, Sarah Ann “Spicy Morgan. Together they had 9 children:
1) Infant – Unknown year and died
2) Nathan Sanders 1852 – 1918
3) Hardy Sanders 1856 – 1904
4) John B Saunders 1859 – 1933
5) Jane Sanders 1862 – 1937
6) Malinda “Lynn” Saunders 1866 – 1960
7) Andrew Sanders 1868 – 1960
8) Cornelia Camilla Sanders 1871 – 1929
9) William M Saunders 1875 – 1937
In 1860 at age 29, Brittan and Spicy were located in what was called, “The Horse Shoe of Cabin Creek” in Moore County.
Military
It is said that he was taken into the service of the Southern forces, left his plow standing in the field and served 3 years, leaving his wife and 4 children July 15th, 1862. He was in the Confederates States Army
Brittan & Spicy Sanders
as Private Company F3 Regiment North Carolina State TRP. He fought at the Battles of Gettysburg and
Cold Harbor.
At age 32, May 12, 1864, he was taken prisoner at Gettysburg, PA until the end of the war. For more
information see Moore's Roster and History of Moore County by Wellman.
Home Again!
In 1870 at the age of 39, he is listed on the census as being home with his family living in Bensalem,
Moore County, NC. He remained there until he died Feb 28th, 1913, at the age of 81 years, 5 months,
and 28 days.
He died Feb 28th, 1913 in Moore County, NC.
Buried
He was laid to rest in the “Brown’s Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.” The church is located on the east side of the road heading south on Brown’s Chapel Road, Spies, Robbins, Moore County, NC. I visited the site, took pictures and posted them in the family tree.
During his life he was a Farmer and a Planter. The cabin he lived was eventually turned over to the "Moore County Historical Association."
The “Britt Sanders Cabin, AKA “Sanders Cabin.
“The “Britt Sanders Cabin” (as it is now referred too) was moved to its present location on the Shaw House grounds in Southern Pines, North Carolina, from rural north western Moore County in 1952. According to the Moore County Historical Association website, the cabin was built circa late 1700’s.
From what Stella Mae Saunders told me, the Brittan Sanders Cabin was built by Hardy Sanders (father of Brittan) and Hardy’s brother Brittan.” Back then the cabin belonged to Brittan sanders the brother of Hardy Sanders, and then later after he died it was turned over to Brittan, son of Hardy. What I do not know is how Brittan acquired the property; will, purchase or given?
Located at the Shaw House Properties 110 Morganton Road at the corner of SW Broad Street Southern Pines, NC.
Kelly (Atkins) Hinson (also a Sanders/Saunders relative) is one of the care takers at the cabin. Go to her profile for her latest phone number if you wish to ask specific questions, or call the More County Historical Association.
