Born early in the morning on Saturday, January 16, 1982, at Henderson General Hospital (now called Juravinski Hospital) located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. At birth, he weighed 5 pounds and 10 ounces.

Ryckman to Barrett

Matthew is the eldest of Judy Ryckman's three sons. Judy's first marriage was to Curtis Barrett , who legally adopted Matthew, and his surname was changed to Barrett around 1984 this is when Judith married Curtis, Matthew was two years of age.

Matthews relatives and ancestors were "Pioneers" of Hamilton "Mountain" specifically, Ryckman's Corners. One of the first settling families on Hamilton Mountain.

One of the Mountain's earliest settlers died

They drew lots for the land and with axes cleared the forest. The United Empire Loyalists planted the seed of Canada's future greatness. Willard Russell Ryckman, one of the area's few remaining United Empire Loyalist died last week of a breathing disorder.

His family was instrumental in settling the Mountain area. Mr. Ryckman is survived by his wife Ruby, sons Elvin and Willard Junior (Ted) and daughter Barbara.

"He's an old mountaineer, " said Ruby. "Way back people went through a lot just to live up here. It was hard to travel around because there were no buses and we had to use the inclines. "

The Ryckman legacy is an old one, rich in the history of the Hamilton Mountain. It began when three brothers came to Hamilton settling at the present Ryckman Comers. Some of the family eventually moved to areas surrounding the Hamilton region but Elvin, great grandson of the first settlers, remained on the Mountain. In 1912, he established Ryckman's Sheet Metal on East 9h Street. Over 75 years later the company is still in business on the same block. Elvin and wife Ellen were known as "Pa and Ma Ryckman. "

Pa Ryckman also worked on the committee that named many of the streets on the Mountain. Willard Ryckman carried on the tradition of Ryckman 's Sheet Metal, his father company, until he retired in 1976. Today, son Ted runs the family business. It has grown from fixing kettles and stove pipes to repairing oil and gas furnaces. " Many people remember Ryckman's Sheet Metal - -coming in for pieces of tin in the days when the incline and walking up the steps were the way to travel unless you had a bike or horse, "recalls Mrs. Ryckman.

Hometown

Twenty minute a drive; South of Rymal Rd & Upper James St/Hwy 6) is the small town of Caledonia where Matthew was raised. The meaning of the name Caledonia is Little Scotland it's a quaint and picturesque, "small" town nestled on the banks of the Grand River, bordering Six Nations of the Grand River and a neighbour of Mississauga's of the Credit First Nation Native Reservation .

Janse/Ryckman

The Patriarchy of the Ryckman surname, ( his 10th Great-Grandfather ) Jan (Janse) Ryckman (1590-bef.1663) came to "The New World" from The Netherlands, in the last half of the 17th Century.

Jan Janse Ryckman is the first Ryckman surname recorded in the dutch colonies of New Amsterdam. Matthew's direct relationship to this Ryckman ancestor are tied to his maternal grandfatherElvin Russell Ryckman (1929-1998).

Jan Janse Ryckman was the father of Albert Janse Ryckman , a prominent brewer of the 18th century in early Albany, he became quite wealthy, served as the appointed 9th mayor of Albany in 1702, after serving on city counsel. He was very much a key person of the city in the times of early Albany. He also served in the Albany Militia ( Pre- American Revolutionary War).

Kip

Matthews 9th maternal great grandfather Jacob Hendricks Kip was the head of prominent, wealthy family, of early Albany prior to the American Revolutionary War. The families memory forever engrained in the history of Manhattan Island , an original settler amd to their honour and memory Kips Bay has remained the name for over two centuries.

Kip Family Mansion

The Kip Family Mansion was the oldest on Manhattan Island until sometime in 1851, when it was recklessly demolished ,the mansion was a barrier in the city's ability to develop the lands and make way for a more industrialized landscape, and to build on the citys infrastructure and shipping requirements of the time.

American Revolutionary War

Matthew's dutch ancestors of his maternal grandfather were among the first settlers of the thirteen British Colonies in the USA, mainly Beverwyck & Rensselaerwyck Colonies, which would today encompassed a large portion of Manhattan Island, including a part of what would be Central Park years later.

Sadly, they were faced with a overwhelming attack on the settlements by the American Rebels, during the American Revolutionary War, which led them to flee and seek refuge in Canada Many were forcibly displaced from their homes, separated from their families, and subjected to the loss of their possessions. Some lost their lives, while others were held captive by the Rebels and tortured.

For the Unity of the Empire

Following their displacement due to the American Revolutionary War, the United Empire Loyalists, were ones that remained loyal to the British Crown, as such they were granted sanctuary in Upper Canada (Bay of Quinte), in what is now the province of Ontario. In exchange for their loyalty and allegiance, the British Crown, under King George III, provided them with land in Canada.
