Biography

Carmela Rumore is born and baptized 24 October 1861 in Corleone. She is the daughter of Gaetano Rumore and Rosalia Provenzano. Her godfather is Giuseppe Cutrone.[1]

Carmela marries Giacomo (or Gioachino) Riina twice, first in a civil ceremony in Calatafimi, where the couple temporarily reside, and again in extremis by the Catholic Church in Corleone, in 1898.

Before either marriage, Carmela and Giacomo have the two of their nine children.

Bernardo is born and baptized 28 October 1885 in Corleone, the son of Carmela Rumore and, officially, an unknown father. His godmother is Biagia Provenzano, who is unmarried. A note beneath his baptismal record indicates that his father marries Carmela in extremis on 5 October 1898, making Bernardo legitimate.[2] Bernardo is named after his paternal grandfather.

Carmelo Gaetano is born and baptized 19 July 1888. Like his brother, he is baptized the son of Carmela Rumore and an unknown father, who is presumed to be Giacomo. Carmelo Gaetano's godparents are Calogero Sparacio and Vincenza la Maritata, a married couple.[3] Because the couple have another son named Gaetano in 1889, and there is no note on this baptismal record legitimizing his birth, it is likely that he dies in infancy.

Gaetano is born in 27 September 1889[4] in Calatafimi.

In January 1891, Carmela marries Giacomo Riina before the state. The civil record tells us he is a campiere (a field watchman) born in Corleone about 1857, and that Giacomo and Carmela are both residents of Calatafimi at this time.[5]

The comune of Calatafimi publishes the marriage of Giacomo Riina, age 33 (b. 1858), born in Corleone, a campiere and resident of Calatafimi, son of Bernardo Riina and Grazia Macaluso, who both live in Corleone; and Carmela Rumore, age 29, born in Corleone, a resident of Calatafimi, and daughter of the late Gaetano Rumore and Rosalia Provenzano; on 7 January 1891. A copy of this publication is in the Corleone matrimonial records.[6]

Carmela and Giacomo have nine known children: Bernardo (1885), Carmelo Gaetano (1888), Gaetano (1889), Antonio (c. 1891), Salvatore (1893), Salvatore Sebastiano Edoardo (1894), Calogera (1894), Giuseppe (1895), and Maria Grazia (1897).

Based on his given age and place of birth in a 1909 manifest, Antonio is born around 1891 in Calatafimi.

By the time Salvatore is born, the family has moved back to Corleone.

Salvatore is born dead on 11 February 1893 in his parents' home at 40 via Lombardia, in Corleone. This record calls his father Giacomo, age 46, a borgese.[7]

Salvatore Sebastiano Edoardo is born in his parents' home at the same address, on 18 January 1894. Giacomo, age 37, is still called a borgese.[8]

Nine months later, Calogera is stillborn on 10 October 1894. By this time, the family has moved to number 161 on via Lombardia.[9]

Giuseppe is stillborn on 29 November 1895. His birth is reported by the midwife, Carmela Cerniglia. The Riina family now lives at 118 via Lombardia. A statement from the midwife appears, explaining that she has reported the birth because Carmela's husband (who is still a borgese) is out of town.[10]

Maria Grazia is born 20 April 1897 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Antonino and Maria Riina, brother and sister.[11]

Gioachino marries Carmela, who is lying at risk of death, on 5 October 1898 in Corleone.[12]

Death of Carmela

Carmela dies two months later at age 37, on 13 November 1898 in Corleone.[13]

Maria Grazia dies at age five (b. 1897) on 9 August 1902.[14]

Antonino Riina, age 18 (b. 1891), is in line 30 of the manifest of the SS Mendoza sailing from Naples 29 September 1909, and arriving in the Port of New York on 15 October. His closest relative at home is his father Giacomo Riina, who lives in the Piazza Inferiore, Corleone. Antonino is a farmer/laborer. Antonino is joining his brother Gaetano Riina, who lives at 2256 107th St, New York. He is 5'5.5" with chestnut hair. Antonino was born in Calatafimi, in Trapani province.[15]

Bernardo marries Lucia Mancuso on 21 October 1910 in Corleone.[16]

Antonio, age 25 (b. 1893), marries in New York on 17 January 1918, to Liboria Cascio.[17]
