Biography

Leonard Rivet, son of Joseph Felo Rivet and Gustavie Bourgeois, was born on 5 November 1889 in Patoutville, Iberia Parish, Louisiana, United States.[1][2] He was enumerated with his parents and siblings during the 1900 and 1910 censuses in St. Mary Parish.[3][4]

He was required to register for the first draft of The Great War in 1917. At that time, he was single with no dependents, and living with his parents in Glencoe, St. Mary Parish. He was described as being stout and of medium build, with light brown eyes and dark brown hair. He worked as a farm laborer for his father.[5]

Leonard was inducted into the U.S. Army on 17 September 1917. He reported for training with Company H, 347th Infantry, until 9 November 1917.[6][7] As a private and a mechanic with Company B, 156th Infantry, 39th Division, he shipped overseas on 22 Aug 1918. They sailed from Hoboken, New Jersey, bound for France on the U.S. Naval Transport President Grant.[7][8] While in France, he was assigned to Company D, 125th Infantry, in October 1918.[6] He departed with his company from Brest, France on 2 May 1919 on the U.S.S. He married Adelia Landry about 1926. They had at least one child, Bonnie Mae.[11]

Leonard and Adelia were enumerated together with their daughter during the 1930 and 1940 censuses, living in Jeanerette, Iberia Parish. They rented their home for five dollars per month. Leonard could not read or write English, but could speak it. He was working for a sugar cane farm.[12][13]
