Biography

Giovanni Riina is born 23 February 1903 and baptized the next day. He is the son of Salvatore Riina and Giuseppa de Luca. His godparents are Francesco Paolo Sciortino and Marianna Provenzano, a married couple.[1]

It appears there are two men named Giovanni Riina, both sons of men named Salvatore, in the same generation in Corleone. The other Giovanni Riina, born in 1897, is the son of Paola Tutino, according to the baptismal record. He is identified with his parents' names in the matrimonial index, in a marriage to Maria Antonina Birtone on 19 November 1922.[2] The two Giovannis Riina are third cousins.

The father of Toto Riina, by process of elimination, is Riina-42. This Giovanni Riina, son of Salvatore, appears in the matrimonial index, marrying Maria Concetta Zizzo, on 9 October 1927.[3]

Giovanni and his wife, Maria Concetta, are fourth cousins.

Giovanni and Maria Concetta have at least five children, including the oldest, Salvatore (1930). The youngest is born within a month of Giovanni's death, in 1943.

Salvatore is called "Toto," and will be one of the most brutal and infamous leaders of the mafia in Corleone.

Toto Riina is named in a court document reprinted in Leone Zingales' book about Toto's associate, Bernardo Provenzano. Salvatore is called the son of the late Giovanni Riina and Maria Concetta Rizzo, born in Corleone 16 November 1930, detained 15 December 1963.[4]
