Biography

Maria Riina is born 23 December 1879 in Corleone and baptized the next day. She is the daughter of Gioachino Riina and Giuseppa di Miceli. Her godparents are Gioachino Riina and Lucia Cannaliato, a married couple.[1] Maria’s father and her godfather are first cousins.

Departing at Naples and arriving in New York on 30 April 1896 aboard the Belgravia:

1326. "Gicomo" Riina, 53 (b. 1843).

1327. Maria Riina, 17 (b. 1879)

1328. Giuseppe, 13 (b. 1883)[2]

Maria Raina marries Francesco Cascio on 16 July 1903 in Manhattan.[3]

Based on the names of Maria and Francesco's children, and assuming Francesco is also from Corleone, he is Castro-304.

Maria and Francesco have five known children: Antonio (c. 1904), Maria (c. 1906), Giuseppina (c. 1908), Giacomino (c. 1910), and Anna (c. 1913). They were all born in the United States. The first two children are named after Francesco's parents, and the second two after Maria's, as is traditional in Sicily.

In the Circuit Court of the US for the Southern District of New York, Frank Cascio, of 325 E. 106th St., born in Italy, arriving in New York 16 August 1897, intends to become a citizen of the US and renounces his allegiance to the King of Italy on 27 August 1903.[4]

In the New York state census of 1905 for Manhattan, Francesco Cascio, 28 (b. 1878), heads a household at 325 E. 106th St with his wife, Maria, 22 (b. 1883), both born in Italy, and son Antonio, 1 (b. 1904), born in the US. Francesco is a carpenter. He has been in the US for 7 years (imm. 1898) and Maria for 10 (imm. 1895).[5]

In the 1915 New York state census of the Bronx, Francesco Cascio, 4?, (second digit obscured; should be 38 based on 1905 census) heads a household at 2427 Belmont Ave with his wife Maria, 33 (b. 1882), both born in Italy, and their children Antonio, 11 (b. 1904), Maria, 9 (b. 1906), Giuseppina, 7 (b. 1908), Giacomino, 5 (b. 1910), and Anna, 2 (b. 1913), all born in the US. Francesco has been in the country for 18 years (imm. 1897). He is a baker, working on his own account. His wife has been in the US for 19 years (imm. 1896).[6]
