Research Notes

  • A 1993 New England Historical and Genealogical Register 147:371 article "Sabin--Remington--Hunt Notes' by Gordon L. Remington, points out the fact that there has been no comprehensive treatment of the descendants of John Remington of Rowley. The main article is about two Marys

Parentage

Several sources attribute to John the parents Richard Remington and Elizabeth Hutton. While Richard seemingly had a son John in England, no source has been found directly connecting this son to the immigrant to America. The probable origin of this hypothetical parentage is Pretyman's 1911 article.[4] Ann Remington Long writing in 1971 laments, "the Pretyman work continues to be copied widely; but because it is so hopelessly confused and overimaginative as to contain almost no truth, it is necessary that it be refuted."[5] She then goes on to refute point-by-point much of Pretyman's construction of the early Remington genealogy.

A previous version of this profile gave without source, Lockington, Yorkshire, England as his place of birth

I believe John Remington is a descendent of Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York 1529-1606 LB8C-KC4 - as Remington is listed under Hutton’s decendents - M

Maxine, thanks for your interest in this PGM-curated profile. As you can see in the 'parentage' section of the profile, some research has been done previously on his parentage. If you have some primary sources clarifying his origins, please go ahead and add them to the profile since WikiTree highly values collaboration on profiles. Thanks in advance!

Also I'd strongly advise reading the "Remington Corrections" article linked by Barry Smith in the comments below.

Long makes a good case that the parentage associated by Pretyman is likely pure fantasy. Is it time to disconnect these parents?
