Sanford enlisted in Company C, 27th United States Colored Infantry on 22 February 1864 in Lanier, Ohio. He was killed in action near Petersburg, Virginia on 30 July 1864.[1]
There is a FindAGrave memorial for him indicating he is buried at Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. However, there is no tombstone; it is unclear if he is actually buried there.[2]
