Biography

Elizabeth Ray, born September 16, 1751, Union County, South Carolina, America, died March 11, 1841, age 90 years, 10 months, and 26 days, on Little River, near Raysville, McDuffie County, Georgia, USA; she is buried in the Old Ragan Family Cemetery, formerly known as Raysville Cemetery, and today known as Methodist Historical Cemetery # 4, in Lincoln County, Georgia; she is enumerated on a on a plaque located in Padgett's Baptist Church Cemetery, Union County, South Carolina.

Elizabeth was a member of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church 1794-1804, located 843 Old Buncome Road, Union County, South Carolina.

Elizabeth Ray, 1751-1831, first married, circa 1770, Major John GRIFFIN, born 1745, Virginia, died August 16, 1780, in the Battle of Fishing Creek, Camden District, in today's Chester County, South Carolina.

In 1902, Elizabeth Ray's grandson, John M Cutliff, provided the names of her 11 children, 6 from her 1st marriage to John Griffin, and 5 from her 2nd marriage to Nathaniel Ragan:: Joseph Griffin; Mary "Polly" Griffin Leverett; Jeremiah Griffin; Elizabeth Griffin Paxson; Sarah Griffin Buice/Bussey/Bucy; and John Griffin; Rebecca Ragan Holliday; Jane Ragan Hemphill Gideon; Cynthia Ragan (apparently died at a young age); Nancy Ragan King; and Lucinda Ragan Cutliff Holliday Mabry.

The given names of Elizabeth's 6 children from her 1st marriage to John Griffin are also found in her 1838 will. The children of her second marriage to Nathaniel Ragan are referred to as her 4 daughters, but not identified by name.

Elizabeth Ragan's Will Registered November 12th 1841. State of Georgia Columbia County In the name of God Amen

I Elizabeth Ragan being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory do Constitute ordain and publish this my last Will and testament as touching of my temporal matters viz:

Itm. 1st. It is my Will and desire that my just debts shall first be paid out of my Estate.

Itm. 2d. I give and bequeath to my oldest son Joseph Griffin decd. his heirs if any living the sum of ten dollars.

Itm. 3rd. I give and bequeath no more of my Estate to my son John Griffin decd. heirs having heretofore given them Eight hundred Dollars.

Itm. 4th. I give and bequeath to my four daughters that I bore to my last husband Nathaniel Ragan and their heirs ten dollars exclusive of what they have heretofore received out of my husbands Estate.

Itm. 5th. I give and bequeath to the balance of my children not heretofore named (viz) Mary Leverett Jeremiah Griffin, Elizabeth Paxton and Sarah Burys the balance of my Estate not heretofore specified to be equally divided (excepting two old negro women Philis & Pat also my brass clock now standing in the house which I will my son Jerh. Griffin to have also my close press I will my daughter in law Eunice Griffin to have.

Itm. 6th. It is further my Will and desire that my son Jeremiah Griffin be my true and lawful Executor to Carry this my last Will and testament into effect disannulling all other Wills, having heretofore been made by me.

In Witness whereof I do hereby assign and publish this my last Will and testament this fifth day of February in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and thirty Six. her Elizabeth x Ragan mark

Georgia This a Codecil to this my last Will and testament Ratifying and Columbia County} Confirming all of the foregoing Will except so far as relates to a part of the fifth Item that gives my two old negro women Phillis and Pat to my son Jerh. Griffin is hereby revoked and no other part.

It is now my Will and desire that my old friend Wm. Paschal shall have the aforesaid two old women Phillis and Pat to his own proper use and benefit. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and offer my seal this twenty third day of March Eighteen hundred and thirty Eight. her Elizabeth x Ragan mark Attest W.A. Baldwin M. A. W. Baldwin A. Georgia Christopher Brooks and William A. Baldwin Columbia County} two of the subscribing Witnesses to the withing and foregoing Will after being duly sworn upon the holy Evangellists, depose and say that they were personally present and saw the testatrix Elizabeth Ragan sign the same (with her mark) and pronounce the same to be her last Will and testament, and that they signed the same as subscribing witnesses in the presence and at the request of the testatrix who was of sound mind and disposing memory at the doing thereof and that Edmund J. Hicks the other witness was presant and signed the same at the same time. And the deposant William A. Baldwin further swears that he was present and saw the testatrix sign the Codecil to said Will with her mark, and that Mary Ann Baldwin & Ann Griffin were present and signed the same as witnesses, all done in the presence and at the request of the testatrix who was of sound mind and disposing memory at the doing thereof. Sworn to in open Court C. Brooks this 25th day of September 1841. W. A. Baldwin A. Jones Clerk Georgia By the Court of Ordinary for said County.

Columbia County} To all who these presents shall come

Greeting.

Know ye that on the twenty fifth day of September in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and forty one, The last Will and testament of Elizabeth Ragan late of said County deceased was exhibited in open Court, and in common form of law, proved & admitted to record a copy of which is hereunto annexed and administration of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of said deceased was granted to Jeremiah Griffin the Executor in and by said Will named and appointed he having first taken the oath and performed all other requisites required by law of him and by order of said Court and by virtue of these presents legally authorised to administer the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased according to the tenor and effect of the said Will and testament and according to law. and is hereby required to render a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased and appraised and returned to this Court according to law and to render a true and Correct account to the said Court of his actings, and doings yearly and every year until his administration is fully Completed.Witness the Honorable one of the Justices, of the said Court of Ordinary this 25th day of September in the year of our Lord 1841.
