Biography

Filippa Raja (or Philippa Raia, as she is known in church records) is born in via San Michele Archangelo, Corleone, on 28 August 1866, the daughter of Antonina Caruso, age 20, and her husband Pietro Raja, age 26, villico (farmer). Filippa will immigrate to New York in 1901, as will her parents and at least three of her children.

In Corleone, Filippa is known in civic records as a contadina (peasant). Filippa marries Domenico Cascio in Corleone (first marriage for each of them) on 4 February 1883. Their parents are all living.

Filippa and Domenico have at least five children together: Bernardo (1884), two sons named Pietro (1886 and 1888), Antonina (1891), and Giovanni (1893).

Bernardo is born 18 January 1884 at 62 via Misericordia, Corleone.

The first son named Pietro is born 28 March 1886 at 34 via Birtone, Corleone.

Pietro dies at two years and three months on 26 June 1888.

The second son named Pietro is born and baptized Petrum on 15 November 1888. His godmother is the unmarried Maria Rosa Raja.

Antonina is born 11 January 1891 and baptized the next day. Her godfather is Joseph Cascio.

Giovanni is born 15 June 1893 at 27 Via Santa Maria, Corleone. He immigrates in 1900 with his grandmother to join his grandfather in New York.

In 1901 Filippa, age 34, sails with two of her children, Bernardo, age 17, and Antonina, age 10, on the S.S. Marco Minghetti. I have estimated that she was also born around 1867 by her age given at the time of immigration. They join her son, Giovanni, and her parents, Antonina Caruso and Pietro Raja, in New York.

Domenico dies aged 57 on 18 September 1908. Filippa survives him.[1]
