Obituary

Greenville Advocate (Greenville, Alabama) Thu, Feb 13, 1873
[Note: Paragrahs have been inserted to aid in readability.]

OBITUARY. Died, at his residence in Butler County, Ala., on the 29th of January 1873, after eight weeks, intense suffering from Pneumonia, Mastin B. Pugh, in the Seventy Eighth year of his age.

Mr. Pugh had been married twice. His last wife died in 1867. He had five children born to him by his first wife and sixteen by the last one, the youngest of whom is in her nineteenth year. He had lost seven children and leaves fourteen living ones, besides grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and all who knew him to mourn his death.

Mr. Pugh was a good citizen, kind husband, an affectionate father and a good neighbor. He was strictly honest and upright in all his business transactions. His greatest pleasure was to relieve the necessities of those who were in indigent circumstances, none were ever turned off unaccommodated who applied to him for help.

He never made any outward profession of Christianity, nor ever attached himself to any branch of the Christian Church, yet when he came to die, he left an abundance of undoubted testimony behind that his spirit was going to return in perfect peace to God who gave it.

All who knew Mr. Pugh, knew him only to respect him for if any man ever lived on earth, to the age of Seventy Eight years, without enemies, that man was Mastin B. Pugh. O O. G.[1]

Research Notes

Name
Some researchers report his middle name as "Burrell," however, he has a younger brother named Burrell and there is no source listed for reporting it as such. On the WikiTree profile page of his father, Jesse Pugh, Mastin's middle name is listed as Bell. There is no documented source for this version of his middle name either. Until a documented source, something other than family trees, is found, genealogical standards require leaving his middle name as the initial "B".
