About the Project

The Love Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Love name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Love name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Love's), by time period (18th Century Love's), or by topic (Love DNA, Love Occupations, Love Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

I come from the Scottish branch of the family. Would like to see if anyone is also from that branch. How far back have others gone? Are you to share your information ? I go back to Nigelli Luf (Nigel Love) 1420 - 1492, my 13th great grand father. Wiki tree does not have my tree back this far, but I also Use Family Tree Maker for my personal tree. I'm willing to accept myth, but not just others un-proven trees.

I'd like to join this study. I'm not a surnamed Love nor do I have any known Loves in my paper pedigree, but I do yDNA-match descendants of James Love b Brunswick VA 1720.

I would like to join this study. While I’m not related to the Love surname, I’ve been helping another wikitree member setup his family tree. He reached out to me after I added another Love profile. I’ve developed a few generations of his ancestry, but could use some additional insight to answer his questions.

If you look at Leonard Francis Love, you will see the family has about 12 children. One of them, Edgar Brown Love, his his direct ancestor. He has been told that Edgar was Indian, Cherokee I think. I have not been able to find anything to support this. The family appears to have migrated from Kentucky/Maryland.

I was thinking about setting up a G2G request but wanted to start here to learn more about the Love ancestry.

Thanks. Steve.

Hi Steve,

I'm an administrator on the FamilyTreeDNA Love DNA project. We have over 300 members, but not all have trees. There are several with Maryland earliest known Love ancestors. We also have one tester with haplogroup Q-M242, which is upstream of a common Native American haplogroup (Q-M3). If you're communicating with a male Love who hasn't done yDNA testing, that would be one route (though some Native Americans share a haplogroup common to many Europeans, so it might not be definitive).

It might prove useful to add his autosomal test, if available, to the FamilyTreeDNA database and join the Love project. https://www.familytreedna.com/autosomal-transfer. Use the Group Projects link to search for and join the Love project. Besides potentially having cousins with relevant knowledge, Love DNA researchers there may be able to suggest strategies.

I have a bunch of Love's in the Lycoming County PA area in my watch list. Not direct but if you're looking for branches check them out. They are attached to the Pennsylvania's Pine Creek Valley and Pioneer Families resource and I added your study in hopes those related and more versed in the family can help you figure our relationships !
Would "love" to join your study! On a furious hunt for Love's further back then my 2nd great grandfather.
