Mission

The purpose of the Hungary Project is to help new members with Hungarian ancestry. Members of the project can also identify and correct WikiTree profiles indicating Hungarian ancestry. The Hungary project will also create and correct village categories for Hungary.

What can we do in the Hungary project?

Any improvements you can make to the profiles of the Hungary Project are welcome, but here are some specific tasks we're working on:

  • For each person:
    • Monitor G2G for posts using the Hungary tag
    • Answer questions at G2G
    • Add locations to the profiles
    • Add sources to the profile
    • Add the Unsourced Hungary category to profiles that need them
    • All duplicates merged into the final lowest profile ID number.
    • All relevant categories are added.

More Advanced improvements:

    • Parents are correct and documented
    • Biography is cleaned up, free of any GEDCOM junk, Ancestry trees, etc., and ideally has an actual written biography.
    • Children are linked if able
    • Connected to Global Family Tree
    • Keep an eye out for notables that we can promote as a promotion for the Hungary project.
    • Encourage members to become involved in the project

Regional Categories for Hungary Project

WikiTree has two sets of regional categories for Hungary. One is in English; the other in Hungarian.

The actual category-editing is being left to those who aren't intimidated by it, but it came up elseweb that the modern definition of Transylvania as "everything in Romania that used to be Hungary" is far larger than Erdély's pre-Trianon boundaries, and this seems as good a place as any to record these notes. The 15 counties of the Kingdom of Hungary that were considered Transylvania in the later 1800s are: Alsó-Fehér, Beszterce-Naszód, Brassó, Csík, Fogaras, Háromszék, Hunyad, Kis-Küküllő, Kolozs, Maros-Torda, Nagy-Küküllő, Szeben, Szolnok-Doboka, Torda-Aranyos, and Udvarhely.

Genealogy in Hungary

Success in Hungarian research, in my experience, is knowing the historical maps of Hungary in order to find the records of your family members.

Any general Hungary wiki can help with that aspect of learning the maps and borders for Hungary, like the Wikipedia section for Hungary

Assistance with maps is invaluable like the ones at the Lazarus site

Knowing how the counties appear and disappeared within the past 350 years in Hungary (when genealogical records would be available) is important:
