Transylvania (Geographic and Historical Region)
Romanian: Ardeal or Transilvania; Hungarian: Erdély; German: Siebenbürgen; Turkish: Transilvanya.
Transylvania is a historical region in the central part of modern Romania. Bounded on the east and south by the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended in the west to the Apuseni Mountains; however, the term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crişana, Maramureş, and Romanian part of Banat.
The 15 counties of the Kingdom of Hungary that were considered Transylvania in the later 1800s are: Alsó-Fehér, Beszterce-Naszód, Brassó, Csík, Fogaras, Háromszék, Hunyad, Kis-Küküllő, Kolozs, Maros-Torda, Nagy-Küküllő, Szeben, Szolnok-Doboka, Torda-Aranyos, and Udvarhely. (The post-Trianon definition basically boils down to "everything in Romania that used to be Hungary", which adds part or all of nine more counties: Arad, Bihar, Krassó, Máramaros, Szatmár, Szilágy, Temes, Torontál, and Ugocsa.)
The unofficial capital of Transylvania is now Cluj-Napoca which was once called Kolozsvár, in Hungarian. The historical German name was Klausenburg, also known as Clausenburg in the Grand Duchy of Transylvania maps, 1769–1773.
The goal of this project is to identify profiles on WikiTree with historical Transylvania Roots.
Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Straty A..
Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.
- Identify Historical EuroAristo Profiles at WikiTree that belong in the Transylvania category
- Check location fields of Transylvania profiles
- Add sources to Transylvania Profiles
