About the Project

The Atwood Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Atwood name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Atwood name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Atwood's), by time period (18th Century Atwood's), or by topic (Atwood DNA, Atwood Occupations, Atwood Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Hi! I added text to the companion category for your name study (Category:Atwood Name Study). Feel free to edit it. The default for the template is to add the main category, but you can add a line to have a different category. See the ONS template page for details. Give me a holler if you have any questions about categorization.

Cheers, Liz

Maxine, on all my name studies I add them to wherever they were born and where they died. It makes it easier to keep up with migration patterns, etc. If you have never created a category, I will create it for you...it can be super confusing to do in the beginning....but I can teach you.

For geographic categories, do we use any geographic place the Attwood lived? Or do we use where the person was born?

For example, I do not know much about Joseph H. Attwood (Attwood-456). Before today, all I knew is that he was the father of a Washington State Attwood. But, today I learned he was born in Missouri, but resided for some time in Kansas (many of his children were born there). Also, his father was reportedly born in Canada.

For Joseph, would we use the geographic Attwood tag Missouri, or Kansas? Is it okay to have one profile have multiple geographic tags? What do you think?!

Hi! One of my great great grandmothers is an Attwood. (attwood-455)
I am an Atwood, and so is my cousin Lincoln Atwood. We are descendants of Stephen Atwood. Linc is a direct male descendant so he should have strong Atwood YDNA. Might wan to check with him about that. We both just got our DNA results back last week.
