Biography
John was born in 1789 in Woolah House, baptized in Kirkby Moorside. He was the son of Ann Potter and an unknown male. The family lived in Woolah House which dated back to at least John's grandfather William Potter's time. In 1816 John married Tamar Wood and they had eight children with six surviving to adulthood. His wife died in 1833 and John didn't remarry. He continued farming and living in Woolah House with his family. He died in 1867 leaving an estate of under 450 pounds sterling with his son John Potter Jr. as the sole executor.
