Biography

Lewis was born in 1840. He was the son of William Porterfield and Mary Albert. He married Mary Catherine Price in 1865.

In the Civil War he served in Company F, 24th Virginia Regiment of Infantry; later with the company of Captain Frank Ballard of West Virginia Troops, a Union outfit. After the war, he became the owner of a large bluegrass farm; was the founder of the Sherry Memorial Christian Church. He made his home in Newport, Virginia. [1]

Lewis died in 1920 and was interred at the Porterfield Cemetery in Giles County, Porterfield, USA. [2]

Each of Lewis' male children had a Northern general's name for a middle name. Lewis was also called Lewt or Lute.
