Biography

Maria Biagia Piranio is born 7 September 1855 to Carmelo Piranio, age 40, agricola (farmer), and his wife Giuseppa Maria di Miceli, age 34, in their home on via S. Elena, Corleone.

There is a long note on the back of this birth extract that I can't quite decipher. Possibly that Maria has presented herself as this person, with these parents, in order to match herself to this birth record. Her birth record gives her father's name as Carmelo, but she is identified below as the daughter of Giovanni. It may also clarify Maria Biagia's mother's name, which originally appears just as Giuseppa, but in her daughter's marital agreement as Maria Giuseppa.

Giovanni Cascio and Salvatrice di Giglia, a married couple, stand as godparents to Maria Biagia Piranio, born 7 September 1855 to Joanne Piranio (the Latin version of Giovanni) and Josepha di Miceli, the day after her birth.

Maria Biagia marries Domenico Quaglino, in the civil record on 10 April 1875, and in church, two days later. All four of their parents have died by this time.

Before they marry, they sign this document, dated 11 March 1875, which appears in the allegati. The document names Maria Biagia Piranio, daughter of the late Giovanni (matching her baptismal record; not Carmelo, as he is named on her birth record) and the late Giuseppa Maria di Miceli, age 20, born in and resident of Corleone, and records the promise to marry Domenico Quaglino, son of the late Leoluca, age 26, born in and resident of Corleone, a villico (farmer). Bernardo Piranio, son of the late Giovanni, 32, and Giovanni Piranio, also son of the late Giovanni, age 28, both also farmers of Corleone, witness. Also witnessing is Giovanni Di Miceli, age 65, of the late Bernardo. Bernardo Di Miceli, son of the late Antonino, age 31, a maternal cousin, also witnesses. I believe the others are all uncles. They all give consent for her to marry.

A more typical certificato di defissione appears in these allegati as well, dated 10 April 1875. Domenico Quaglino, son of the late Leoluca, and Maria Biagia Piranio, daughter of the late Giovanni, have posted all necessary banns and are married in Corleone on this date.

Maria Biagia and Domenico have at least six children: Maria Felicia (1876), Leoluca (c. 1877), Giuseppa (1879), Leoluchina (1882), Maria (1888), and Giovanni (1890).

Maria Felicia is born on 14 May 1876 in her parents' home , #8 via San Giovanni, Corleone, and baptized the same day. Her godparents are Luciano and Biagia Cortimiglia, brother and sister.

Leoluca is named after his paternal grandfather, suggesting an early birth order. His baptismal record has not yet been found.

Giuseppa is born 6 April 1879 and baptized the next day as Josepham. Her godparents are Antonino la Barba and Lucia Grizzaffi, a married couple.
Leoluchina is born 31 August 1882 and baptized 1 September as Leoluchinam. Her godfather is Angelo Cascio, unmarried son of Antonino. (Antonino is Domenico's godfather.)
Maria is born 17 October 1888 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Gioachino Crescimanna and Giuseppa, his unmarried sister.

Maria dies at eight months of age on 20 June 1889.

Giovanni is born and baptized 3 September 1890, named after his maternal grandfather. His godmother is Giuseppa Salemi, wife of Calogero Mangano.[1]

Maria Biagia dies the same day, at age 35, in her home at #8 via San Giovanni, Corleone. Both civil and Church death records identify her father as Giovanni, not Carmelo.

The infant Giovanni dies on 6 May 1891.

Her oldest daughter, Maria Felicia, age 16, marries Nicolo' Gulotta on 29 April 1893.

Giuseppa dies, unmarried, at age 18 (b. 1879) on 30 July 1897. Her father survives her.

Leoluchina marries Luciano di Miceli on 18 October 1903.

On 30 April 1908, Leoluca marries Arcangela Pomilla.[2]
