Mr. Piggott was the third husband of Sarah (Unknown) Gaye Hancock Piggott. He died, likely in Lower Norfolk County, before she wrote her will in April, 1689.
Sarah was first married to Gilbert Guy. As his widow she married Simon Hancock by 1642. By him she had a number of children. After Hancock died, she married a (John?) Pigot. She wrote her will in 1689 in Lower Norfolk County.[1]
Research Notes
J. Rives Childs suggests that Sarah (Unknown) Gaye Hancock's third husband was possibly William or John Piggott.[2]
Sarah's received a patent in 1654, in which William Piggott is named among the headlights.[3] However, this seems to be the only record which attests to his existence.
Beverly Fleet's abstracts give evidence for a John Piggott being in Lower Norfolk, Virginia:
15 Dec 1651, On petition of John Piggott, merchant, he to be paid amount due from estate of Robert Eyre, gent., dec'd.[4]
17 Apr 1652, Deed of Gift: Symon Hancock to god-son John Williams, cow calf In this manner: first calf for use of John Williams, third calf for use of Elizabeth Carraway; if John Williams should die before the age of 21 years, cattle to Elizabeth Carraway; if she should die before coming to age, to John Carraway his second or third child, and for better looking after these cattle the father and mother should have the male increase, to be recorded as a free gift. witnesses: William Moseley, John Piggott,[5][6]
22 Mar 1653/4, Edw. Robinson chirurgeon to pay debt of 342 lbs. tobacco due John Piggott, merchant. Also Piggott to pay Robinson 120 lbs. tobacco due him.[7]
Mr. Childs' article on "The Hancock Family of Lower Norfolk..." also mentions that John swore he was 38 years old in 1658 in Lower Norfolk. It's not likely he was born in Virginia as there was nobody with his surname present for the 1624/1625 muster of inhabitants (see The 1624 Muster of Inhabitants (Freespace profile)).
