Biography

Anna Mary Pierce was born in September 1864 to Michael Pierce and Mary Daley in Brooklyn, New York.[1][2][3]

In 1880, Anna and her family were living on East 2nd Street, in Brooklyn.[1]

Annie married Thomas Boland around 1885 in New York City, likely at the family church, in Flatbush.[2][3]

Between 1887 and 1891, Annie and Thomas lived at 593 East 3rd Avenue in Flatbush. Their first son, John, was born in 1887.[4] Their first daughter, Mary Agnus, was born in 1888.[5]

In 1892, Annie and Thomas were living in Windsor Terrace, a small, rural village on the outskirts of Flatbush. Their home was at 44 East 2nd Street.[2] They had a son, William, in February[6] and then in November of that year, their daughter, Mary Agnus, died, at only four years old.[5]

Between 1894 and 1899, Annie and Thomas welcomed four more children to their family: Ellen, James, Anna and Thomas. By 1900, they had moved to 530 18th Street, in Windsor Terrace.[3] They lost their son, William, in September of 1900.[6]

In January 1904, Annie and Thomas had a son, Michael, however, he only lived a few days. They were living at 549 18th Street at the time of his death.[7] In April 1905, they welcomed a daughter, Lillian and were living at 345 22nd Street.[8]

Research Notes

  • 1900 Residence
  • Children Deceased
    • The 1900 US Census enumerated on 1 June that Anna had eight children born and only six children living. Only seven children born (1887, 1888, 1892, 1894, 1896, 1898 and 1899) and one that died in 1892 have been identified. More research needs to be done to identify the missing child and when they were born.
      • Interment search at Holy Cross Cemetery doesn't list the missing child in the plot where Anna and her other children are buried.
      • Interment search at Holy Cross Cemetery lists two individuals that were buried in 1893 in the plot where Thomas is buried with his parents and a couple of siblings.
      • I've read that Catholics historically would recognize and name miscarriages. Not sure if that's the case here, but noting it here as a reminder to myself. ~ Allison Mackler, 14 September 2020
