Early Years

Robert George Peters was born on 1 September 1890, his birth registered between Oct-Dec 1890 at Totnes, Devon, England.[1] Robert was baptised on 8 February 1891 at Dartmouth, St Saviour, Devon. He was the son of William Harry Peters and Sarah Andrews.[2]

Robert was the youngest of seven children born to William and Sarah:

  4. William John Peters, born 1884
  5. Cecil Maurice Peters, born 1886

In the 1891 census of Dartmouth, Devon, Robert G Peters was age 6 months and living at Silver Street with his father William H Peters, a Naval Pensioner (41), mother Sarah (34), a Fish Saleswoman, and siblings Henry (14), Errand Boy, Florence R (11), Alice M (9), William J (6), Cecil M (4) and Frances B (2).[3]

In the 1901 census of Dartmouth, Devon, Robert was age 10 and living at Silver Street with her father William H Peters (51) Naval Pensioner, mother Sarah (44), and siblings Cecil M (14) and Frances B (12).[4]

In the 1911 census of Dartmouth, Devon, Robert was age 19, a Coal Worker, now recorded by his second name, George, and living at Lower Street with his brother William John Peters (26), a Boot Proprietor, and his wife Rhoda (32) and their daughter Gladys May (1).[5]

Marriage

Robert George Peters married Katie Crang, their marriage registered between Jan-Mar 1916 at Totnes, Devon.[6]

Military Service & Death

George served during the Great War as Private George Peters, Service No: 11279, with the Devonshire Regiment, 1st Battalion. He was Killed in Action on 26 September 1916, aged 25, in France and Flanders in the Western European Theatre of War[7] and is buried at Thiepval Memorial Cemetery, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France.[8]
