James was born Sep 1771 in Hebron, Connecticut.[1] He is listed without surname as "James, s. Ce[a]sar and Loice, negroes, born Sep 1771."
His parents were enslaved by Samuel Peters of Hebron CT, and so James was born enslaved. In 1787, when his family was being forcibly taken from their home to be sold in South Carolina, James (then age 16) escaped from the slave-traders.
He and his entire family were manumitted in January 1789, when James was 18. The family took the surname of Peters.
No record has yet been found of a marriage but his father's will refers to "each of the children of my son James, deceased."
James passed away before 25 June1814, which is when his father wrote his will.
