Alice Adeline Pavey, daughter of Frederick Pavey & Eliza Hatt, was born on 5 March 1860 in Bayswater, Middlesex, England. Her birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1860 in the Kensington registration district. Her exact birth date is from her later baptism record.[1]
In the 1861 census Alice (age 1) was living with her parents at 6 Ranelagh Road, Paddington, Middlesex, England. Eight other people were living at the same address but considered two other households. One household was that of Alice (Cross) Hatt, Alice Adeline Pavey's maternal grandmother. Many of Alice's uncles worked as photographers. Alice's uncles, Robert and Frederick Hatt, were living in the same house at the time and recorded as photographers. Also living at the same house was Alice's widowed aunt Ann Aspland (Hatt) Ashton and her daughter. Ann later married William Whiting, another photographer.[2]

Alice Adeline was baptised at the age of 9 on 22 July 1869 at St George the Martyr, Queen Square, Camden, England. She was baptised at the same time as her two younger siblings Alfred Archibald and Beatrice Eliza. Their father was recorded as a Cabinet Maker living at 21 Great Ormond Street in Holborn. The church she was baptised as was just at the end of that street.[3]
When she was about 10, Alice sat for a portrait at the photographic studio of her uncle, Robert Hatt, at 16 Surrey Terrace, Counter Hill, New Cross, S.E. London.

When she was 17, Alice had a daughter Kate Florence. The father is unknown. Kate was baptised on 1 September 1878 as the child of Alice's parents at the same time as their daughter Julia Elizabeth at Holy Trinity, Paddington. The family was living at 9 Chippenham Road, Paddington.[5]
In the 1881 census Alice (age 21) was living with her parents at 7 Chippenham Rd, Paddington, London, England. Her daughter Kate was with her along with her married brother Alfred, his wife Jane and their son Frederick. Also her unmarried sister Beatrice. On the same street, at number 42, was a greengrocers run by the widowed Theresa Kelley. Alice's youngest sister, Julia, age 14, was recorded as a servant at the Kelley household - possibly helping with the young children. Theresa Kelley had two sons, John William who was 14 at the time, and Charles Frederick who was 8. Alice's sister Beatrice later married John William Kelley in 1889. Alice herself would later marry the younger brother Charles Frederick Kelley in 1893.[6]

By 1884, Alice had started a relationship with John Alfred Chantler. She presumably knew John Chantler because two of her aunts had married two Chantlers who were brothers. Her aunt Julia Ann Pavey had married Henry Chantler in 1867 and her aunt Fanny Frances Pavey had married Thomas Edwin Chantler in 1871. Henry and Thomas were half-brothers of John Alfred Chantler's father (all children of his father George Chantler) and also half-brothers of John Alfred Chantler's mother (all children of her mother Maria Rebecca Hall). See this diagram to see this explained. Alice took the last name of Chantler, as did her daughter Kate, but no record of their marriage has been found. John was a musician or music trader. Alice and John had 3 daughters together. John died in September 1890 at the age of 33. Alice described herself as a widow in 1891 so obviously considered herself married to John. Her husband was listed in the 1891 Kelly's directory at High Road, Upper Tooting under "Music & Musical Instrument Sellers".[7]
In the 1891 census Alice (age 37) was the widowed head of household at the Music Warehouse on Balham High Road in Upper Tooting, London, England. She was living with all four of her daughters. Her sister Julia was visiting. Her parents were living at Kate Street in Balham which was close by.[8]

Sometime between 1891 and 1893 Alice and her four daughters sat for a portrait at the Aspland Whiting studio at 314 Holloway Road, North London. The studio was operated by Alice's cousin William Aspland Whiting. In the the photo the children are: Kate Florence Pavey/Chantler (back right), Rosa Georgina Chantler (left), Alice Barbara Chantler (right) and Beatrice Ada Chantler (center).

Alice's daughter Kate married Albert Edwin Chantler in the first half of 1893 in Rochford, Essex. She would have been about 16 and he was about 18. Albert was Alice's first cousin (son of her aunt Fanny Frances (Pavey) Chantler) and also the first cousin of her deceased partner John Alfred Chantler.
Later that year Alice married Charles Frederick Kelley in October 1893 in Paddington, London. Charles was Alice's brother-in-law - her younger sister Beatrice having married his older brother John William in 1883. Alice and Charles had one child: Charles Kelley.[9][10]
In the 1901 census Alice (age 39) was living with her husband Charles Kelley and her youngest 4 children at 15 Cirencester Street in Paddington, London, England. Her mother was recorded as the head of a separate household at the same address, with her were Alice's aunt Catherine Hatt (recorded as a widow but may never have married), Alice's cousin Frederick Pavey and his future wife Nellie Charles. Strangely Alice's mother was recorded as a widow but her father was recorded as a married pauper at Paddington Workhouse which was a few streets away.[11]

Alice's death (age 78) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1939 in the Brighton district.[14] In September that same year, in the 1939 register, her husband Charles (age 67), Unskilled Work General Labourer, was the widowed head of household at 2 Belmont in Brighton, Sussex, England. Her son Charles Kelley was married and living in Newhaven, Sussex. He was working as a Radio Operator on the ship S.S. Paris.
Alice is at the center of a complicated entanglement of marriages. This is documented here.
