Champ was born in 1899. He was raised in his maternal grandfather's home by his mother. According to 1900 Knox County, Kentucky census, Sarah, Champ's mother, was not married to Mr. Hammonds.
By 1920, Champ was married to his wife, Martha and working as a coal miner. According to the 1930 census, Champ and Martha were married when he was 16 and she was 24.
He worked as a coal miner at the Belva No. 1 Coal Mine in Fourmile, KY. On 26 Dec 1945, there was a mine explosion. Champ's body was never recovered.
