Biography

James Paton was probably born in Scotland before 1779.

He married Christian Hunter on 26 December 1797 in the parish of St Martin's, Perthshire, Scotland.^[1]

James and Christian had three known children:

1. Peter born 9 December 1798, family resident at Gairdrum, registered in the parish of St Martin's, Perthshire.^[2]
2. Anne Paton, baptised on 26 April 1801, family resident at Gairdrum, registered in the parish of St Martin's.^[3]
3. Janet Paton, baptised on 17 November 1805, family resident at Kinoul, registered in the parish of St Martin's.^[4]

James died some time between the baptism of daughter Janet in 1805 and son Peter's death in 1877.

1. Birth year calculated on the basis that James was at least 18 years old at the time of his marriage in 1797.
2. Children listed are ones baptised in St Martins parish, where baptisms name both parents. James may have farmed elsewhere, had children baptised with only his name given as parent, or there may have been more children whose baptisms were not recorded.
3. James's first and last names cross-reference with his son Peter's death certificate where he was recorded as deceased in 1877.^[5] All of his children's marriages and his daughters' deaths seem to have occurred before 1855 statutory records.
