Biography

Elizabeth Parlett was likely born in Yarmouth, England. Her first husband was ___ Taylor. Neither her parentage, nor her husband Taylor's first name has been discovered. [1]

She had two Taylor children, Peter and Susan. [1]

By about 1610, she married secondly, John Goodale of Great Yarmouth, as his second wife. [1]

Her second husband, John Goodale was buried at Great Yarmouth, England on July 7, 1625. [1]

In his will made June 25, 1625 and proved September 24, 1625, he left bequests to:

  • wife Elizabeth, executrix
  • Richard, eldest son of my first wife and his two children
  • daughter Rebecca
  • daughter Frances Marston, wife of William and their children John, Marye, Elizabeth
  • sons Christopher, Joseph, Mordechaus
  • Susan and Peter Taylor, my wife's children
  • my son John, eldest by my wife Elizabeth, executor
  • daughters Elizabeth and Marie
  • nephew Robert Goodale
  • Nichodemas and Elizabeth Parlett, children of my wife's brother John Parlett
  • and other bequests to the poor and some friend's and cousins
  • he names William Parlett, kinsman and friend to be overseer [1]

In 1637, widow Elizabeth Goodale and (stepson) Richard Goodale, were defendants in a Chancery suit brought against them by Henry Searles. She and her daughter Elizabeth Goodale, sailed to New England sometime after this suit in about 1638. [2] In 1640, they were of Newbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her son John remained in England. [1]

Elizabeth died at Newbury, Massachusetts on April 8, 1647. [3] Her estate was placed in the hands of temporary administrators, but her daughter Susan and her husband Abraham Topham, and her daughter widow Elizabeth Lowle, petitioned the court, and were later granted administration. [1]

[3] She is noted to be the youngest daughter of john and Elizabeth Goodale. [5] In the will of Elizabeth (Goodale) Lowle made March 1, 1650, she instructs that her brother Thomas Millerd, keep her son Benjamin and his estate until he 'goes forth to be an apprentice', and Thomas Millerd is named an overseer of Elizabeth's estate. [6] [7] In the Lowell Genealogy: Ann/Abigail Goodale, sister of Elizabeth (Goodale) Lowell, married Thomas Millard. [8]

Research Notes

An Elizabeth Parlett married "_____ Tayler" January 31, 1604 at Stradsett, Norfolk, England.[11] The same parish register also reports the marriage of Elizabetha Tayler July 26, 1609 to Johannes Cuddea. At the bottom of the image, in different ink, is a name which appears to be Johannes Gooday shown with a marriage to an illegible name, undated except that it is shown with the other 1609 marrages.[12] It is uncertain whether either (or both) of these marriages are for this Elizabeth.

Both of her marriages were updated in the past day, citing Stradsett Parish Registers at FindMyPast. Does anyone have access to verify the changes made? If not, the changes should be reversed.

I believe it to be correct and a good find. The first marriage record is for Elizabeth Parlett to _____ Tayler - apparently his first name is unreadable. Note that this perfectly matches the article by Walter Goodwin Davis that says she was born a Parlett and her first husband was named ____ Taylor (he did not have this marriage record but was derived from wills).

The second record is indexed as Elizabetha Tayler to Johannes Cuddea. However, looking at the original I believe the name should be Johannes Goodeal.

The original of the first marriage is on the same page. I can't read it either but someone might (the marks are clear). The name is short 4 or 5 letters, and the first letter seems to be how the writer makes his Rs.

I believe parties in the two relevant entries read:

"Ricus Tayler & Elizabeth Parlett" and "Johannes Guddell et Elizabetha Tayler"

Thus, her first husband is probably Richard Taylor. He is quite possibly the man who is buried in Wyberton, Lincolnshire, on 28 May 1609 and whose will was proved at PCC 9 Aug 1609 (which names wife Elizabeth, son Peter, and daughter Susan). This would also explain how John Goodale/Goodall came to have property in Lincolnshire (where he and his family seem to be exclusively Norfolk-based) - Elizabeth inherited it from her first husband, and it thus passed to her second one. The only issue (and it's a minor one) with this, is the will of Richard Taylor was proved in August 1609 to his widow, Elizabeth Taylor, after she purportedly was married to Mr Goodale (which took place in July 1609).

Note: Wyberton registers have baptismal entries for Susanna (23 Sep 1606), Jane (8 Apr 1608 - buried 10 Apr 1608), and Peter (24 Mar 1608/09), the children of Richard Taylor.

To go back a further generation, Elizabeth is the daughter of John Parlett the Elder of Stradsett, who was buried 23 May 1620 and whose will (proved the same day in the Archdeaconry Court of Norfolk) named her and her issue of both Taylor and Goodall.

Since she married a Goodale from Great Yarmouth, which is indeed in Norfolk, I'd assume that's the Yarmouth we're talking about. (Google Maps also shows a Yarmouth at the southern end of England, on the Isle of Wight, but that's a long way from Great Yarmouth.)

Yarmouth, which county ? Norfolk ?

Parlett-2 and Parlett-9 appear to represent the same person because: Approximately same birth date, same death date and location, same alternate last name (Taylor). Appears to be the same person who first married a man with the last name of Taylor and subsequently married John Goodale.

Mm. The Bridgett as first wife implies this is a different John Goodale. We've GOT to get that 1625 will.
