Biography

Eliza was born in 1836. She was the daughter of Henry Page and Sarah Parkhurst. She passed away in 1855.^[1]

The following report of a Coroner's Inquest into Eliza's deaths give a grim picture of her life seemingly estranged from her family and their support. By 1855, Eliza's father had remarried and may have been on the move from South Australia to New South Wales.

CORONER'S INQUEST.—An inquest was held at Willunga, on the 21st inst., by J. Colville, Esq., J.P., on the body of Eliza Page, a young girl of about eighteen, who died suddenly in her bed on the night of Friday last. It appeared that the deceased had been delivered of a child about a month ago, and had not, either at the time or since, been able, on account of her destitute circumstances, to obtain medical aid. She had remained in a very weak state, and complained of a constant pain in her side. The Coroner having deemed it necessary to have a post mortem examination, Dr. Jay performed the operation, when it was found that an abscess had formed, the bursting of which had been the immediate cause of death. The Jury returned a verdict to that effect.^[2]

It would appear that Dr. Jay's account for Eliza's treatment in the amount of £2/2/0. was still outstanding a year later and not approved by the Destitute Board because no prior approval was obtained before rendering the treatment.^[3]
