George was born in Sussex and baptized on 1 Oct 1826 in Wilmington. His parents were Henry (Labourer) and Charlotte Page[1].
He was convicted of larceny at Sussex, Assizes at Lewes. The trial date was 20 Mar 1848. He was sentenced to 10 years transportation. The trial was reported in the local newspaper, Sussex Advertiser - Tuesday 28 March 1848[2], thus: "George Page, labourer, 21, pleaded guilty to having, at Arlington, on the 10th November, feloniously and burglariously broken and entered the dwelling house of George Fears, and stolen therefrom one silver watch, value £3, a steal chain, seal, and watch key, the property of Thomas Fears, and one pair of cloth trowsers, value 12s., the property of David Huggett.—Ten years' transportation." From the Lewes gaol he was sent in early April to Millbank Prison and then in early December to Pentonville Prison[3]. In August 1849 he was sent to the new prison at Portland[4] where he joined the Rodney a year later.
George Page was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Diemen's Land
He was transported to Van Diemen's Land on the Rodney, 1850. The convict indent lists his height at 5'1¼, age 24, Single, can both read and write. The "statement of offence" reads Housebreaking, stealing a watch and a pair of trousers / property of Thos Fear nr Lewes / for Money 14 days His occupation is shown as FLab (farm labourer). His "native place", W Lewes[5]. His conduct record, which is without any comments apart from recording his ticket of leave and conditional pardon, gives a little more detail of the conditions of his transportation: Transported for burglary after prior conviction. Single. Attested this offence. Housebreaking Stg a watch & a pair of trowsers pr. Thos Fears near Lewes for money. 14 days.[6]. His Police number was 23383P. His Convict Number was 54351.
The Rodney departed Portland, Dorset 19 Aug 1850 and arrived in Hobart Town 28 Nov 1850[7]. The ship's Surgeon Superintendant was Mr Le Grand.[8].
Ticket of leave was granted April 1852, no. 23383[9].
Recommended for conditional pardon, April 1852[10]. His record also shows that he was assigned to work for "Cr Briggs, Br[idge]water" from 12 Dec 1850. The absence of further assignments suggests that he stayed with the Briggs family until he received his Ticket of Leave 0n 6 Apr 1852.
In 1853 his marriage was approved by Convict Dept.[11][12]. On 31 Mar 1853 he married Mary Ann Briggs who was 17 years old at the time (and listed in the marriage permission as 'free', i.e. not a convict). (George was 26.) The marriage was registered in Brighton, Tasmania.[13][14]. Mary signed the register with a cross.
Louisa was born circa 1875. She married Alexander Sice 19 Jan 1896[30][31]
George died 25 Jul 1888 in Beaconsfield, Tasmania[32] and is buried in Launceston[33].
Research Notes
It seems that the name Page was common in Wilmington, Sussex. In the year 1826 this five out of 20 births recorded in the parish were to a mother with surname Page: Richard & Sarah (daughter Eliza), Mary Page (daughter Charlotte Davies), Henry & Charlotte (son George), William & Sarah (son James), William & Elizabeth (son James). This makes absolute certainty about the identity of the correct family impossible without DNA evidence, but it seems likely that the child born to Henry and Charlotte is the right one.
Henry and Charlotte were married in Chiddingly in 1826[34]. Henry was born in 1809[35] -- he was young at his marriage but the lapse of only seven months between marriage and baptism of son George suggests a reason.
