Biography

Thomas Newsom Pace was an American soldier. Pace was a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. Colonel Pace commanded the 1st Indiana Cavalry (aka: 125th Regiment).

Thomas was born on August 17, 1831, in Cumberland County, Kentucky. ^[1] He was the son of Wyatt Pace and Sarah S (Barton) Pace. ^[2]

In 1860, Pace was a merchant in Millersburgh, Indiana. ^[3]

On August 20, 1861, Thomas N Pace enrolled as a Captain in Company G, 1st Indiana Cavalry (28th Regiment). Captain Pace was engaged in a scouting expedition to Mississippi. ^[4] In 1863, Pace was promoted to Major (January 3, 1863), and then Lieutenant Colonel, Field and Staff, 1st Indiana Cavalry (May 1, 1863). ^[5][2] The 1st Cavalry, with Lt. Colonel Pace, was deeply involved in the Battle of Helena.

When the 10th Indiana Cavalry (also known as 125th Regiment) was formed, Pace was promoted to Colonel in command of the 10th Cavalry. Colonel Pace resigned on March 16, 1865. ^[6][2]

Postbellum

During the War, Thomas N Pace married Mary E Wilcox in Fremont County, Iowa, on August 12, 1863. ^[7]

By 1880. Pace was a dry goods merchant. He and his wife, Mary, were living in Shenandoah, Iowa. ^[8]

Pace was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Iowa. ^[2]

Death

Colonel Thomas Newsom Pace passed away in 1919. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Iowa. ^[1]
