Biography

According to all the census published from 1861 until 1901 there is a discrepancy in Sarah's birth year. Her parents Isaac and Mary married on 12 May 1860 in Llantwit Fadre, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom. The 1871 census shows her as 10 years old. However, in the 1881 census, after marrying John Jackett, her age is noted as 25 and this trend carries through until her death in 1901.

Mary gave birth to Sarah[1]during the month of March 1861 and was registered in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom with the census published[2]the following month showing her as 1 month old. Her father was a Collier and they lived at the Fox and Hounds Inn, Llantwit Fardre, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom with Publican John Jacob and family. Later in the year on 27 October she was baptised in Llantwit Fardre, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom.[3][4]

The census of April 1871 shows the family living in the same place as the last census near to the Hollybush Inn but the form states they live in Tonteg, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom. Her father, Isaac, mother Mary, brother John and sister Mary. Sarah and Owen are Scholars.[5]

She married John Jackett in the first quarter of 1876 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom[6][7]and they had both moved further west to Jones Terrace, Llansamlet Lower, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom by the completion of the April 1881 census. Her husband's occupation was a Wheelwright and she had goven birth to three daughters naming them Sarah, Margaret and Mary.[8]

All of their seven children are living at home in Wassail Street, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom in the April 1891 census[9]where she lived with her husband John Jackett, who worked as a Carriage Builder, daughters Sarah, Margaret, Mary and Gladys and sons Owen, Gwyn and James. Later this year Gladys sadly passed followed by their three year old son, Glyn, who died the following year.

The census of March 1901[10]shows that her husband John Jackett continues to work as a Coachbuilder and that they have moved to The Grove, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom. Still living at home with Sarah are their daughters Margaret and Gladys and sons Owen and Stanley. Both Sarah and Mary had left the family home to work as Nurses - Sarah was a Sick Nurse and was boarding in Pontardawe, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom and Mary was a Hospital Nurse, where she helped to care for seven patients at the Nurses Home in Wetherell Place, Bristol, Somerset, England, United Kingdom. Shortly after, Sarah passed at the official age of 45, although, as already noted, this does not tally with her birth year of 1861[11][12]and was laid to rest[13] with two of her already buried children, Gladys and Glyn in Plot 171E, Danygraig Cemetery, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom.

Research Notes

  • The marriage certificate of her mother and father indicates the surname as Owen.
  • The 1891 census spells her surname as Jacket.
