Biography

Jane was a Friend (Quaker)

Jane Owen was the daughter of Owen ap Evan and Gainor ferch John.[1]

Name Variations

  • Jane ferch Owen. It is possible that her name at birth was "Jane ferch Owen" since her siblings used the patronymic format. "Patronymic surnames are based on the father’s given name. Generally, ap or ab was added between the child’s name and the father’s name. For example, David ab Owen is David "son of" Owen. For a woman’s name, the word ferch meaning "daughter of", was used. [2] Since the Welsh "ferch" sometimes sounds like "verch", English writers often used the verch spelling.
  • Jane Owen. As an adult she appears in records with the name Jane Owen. Welsh names were transitioning from patronymic naming to surnames following the law of 1585 requiring such a change. As the change in naming requirements was implemented over time, the ap, ab or ferch might simply be dropped, and Jane ferch Owain become simply Jane Owen.

Birth Year Estimate
Her son Owen was born in December 1677, so it may be assumed that she was married at least by the beginning of 1677. If she was aged 17 at her wedding, she would have been born, say, 1660.

Several children were born before she emigrated to Pennsylvania with her husband, which would suggest an earlier marriage year and earlier birth year. Other genealogies estimate a birth year of 1653, which is not unreasonable.[1]

Marriage and Family
She is said to have married Hugh Roberts 1672-3 in Merionethshire,[1] and no later than early 1677, based on the birth of her son.

"All of their children, except Elizabeth, were born in the township of Kiltalgarth."[3]

Jane Owen bore Hugh Roberts six children who "assumed the surname 'Roberts'":[4]

  • Robert Roberts[4]
  • Ellin Roberts[4]
  • Owen Roberts, married Ann Bevan[4]
  • Edward Roberts[4]
  • William Roberts (1682-1697)[4]
  • Elizabeth Roberts[4]

Research Notes

Some researchers report that Jane (Owen) Roberts was born in 1653 in Llanfor, Merionethshire, Wales and that she died 1 July 1686 in Merion, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[6]

Jane, daughter of Owen ap Evan Robert Lewis, married Hugh Roberts. She was the sister of Robert Owen.[4]

"'Robert Owen, of Vron Goch,' was one of those Quakers fined for meeting at Llwyn y Braner, in the parish of Llanvawr, May 16, 1675 (Penna. Mas., Vol. V. p. 359), together with his two sisters, Elin, who afterwards married Cadwalader Thomas ap Hugh, and Jane, wife of Hugh Roberts. His younger brother, 'Evan Owen ye son of a widdow called Gainor, whose late husband was Owen ap Evan of Vron Goch,' was also present at a meeting, 'though but 9 or 10 years old.'"[7]

Evans-15160 and Owen-1360 are not ready to be merged because: I'm postponing this merge while we discuss on G2G whether her LNAB should be Owen or ferch Owen. Her sisters and brother have the ap and ferch designations but she doesn't. Which is correct?

Evans-15160 and Owen-6731 appear to represent the same person because: these profiles were attached as wife to duplicate profiles for the Friends' minister Hugh Roberts, who married twice, but his second wife was Elizabeth Jones. His first wife was Jane, and sources give her surname as Owen. Please merge.
