Nehemiah Ogden, the son of Richard Ogden was baptized at Middleton St. Leonard's, Lancashire, England on 1 September 1616.[1] He was resident in Wrexham, Denbignshore, Wales when he died on died on 18 April 1713 and was buried at Wrexham on 20 June 1713.[2][3]
Nehemiah married more than once. The name of his earlier wife or wives is not known. His last wife was Sarah Wilde of Oldham in Lancashire, whom he married without the consent of the Monthly Meeting held in Middlewich, Cheshire on 31 July 1702 (27th of 9th month 1702).[4] Consent was withheld in consideration of his age (86) at the time.
His son David Ogden was baptized on 4 January 1650 in Chester St. Peter's, Cheshire, England.[5] Nehemiah's residence is not given in this record.
Nehemiah probably had another son named Nehemiah Ogden who died on 14 June 1681 (14th of 4th month 1681) as recorded in the Worcestershire Monthly Meeting minutes.[6] The son's death is often conflated with his father's, although subsequent records show that his father lived until 1713.
Pennsylvania records indicate that Nehemiah may have had two daughters, Hannah and Sarah, sisters of his son David.[7]
Late in life Nehemiah (age 86) married Sarah Wilde of Oldham (age 67) without the consent of his Monthly Meeting. Nehemiah was said to be of the Rodulph (Rudolph?) Meeting when on 26 June 1702 he first presented his intention to marry Sarah Wilde who belonged to the Oldham Meeting in Lancashire. On 31 Jul 1702 their second presentment was laid before the Meeting, but the Meeting found that Nehemiah had gone contrary to the desires of the yearly meeting, and considering his age and other circumstances, desired that he would desist. The saga continued with subsequent Meetings on the 27 November 1702 and the 25 December 1702 calling for Nehemiah to produce his marriage certificate and subsequently recording Nehemiah's failure to appear. Finally, on 29 January 1703, the marriage certificate was presented and on 26 February 1703 it was forwarded to the next Quarterly Meeting to be recorded.[4]
On 27 June 1707, at the Monthly Meeting held in Wrexham, the "condition of our poor Friend Nehemyah Ogden & his wife was laid before this Meeting they both being very ancient & thereby not able to get their living, & little to Subsist upon, & it is ordered by this meeting that John James see to those condition & supply them with what they want & give an account to our next Monthly Meeting." Subsequently money was disbursed periodically up until Nehemiah's death on 18 June 1713.[8]
His widow, Sarah Wilde died on 1 December 1727 at the age of 92 and was buried at Wrexham.[9][10]
The Quaker Nehemiah Ogden of Wrexham, Wales, was probably the same Nehemiah Ogden who was the son of Richard Ogden of Middleton, Lancashire. The record found for this Nehemiah who baptized in 1616 in Middleton is the only birth record thus far identified that remotely fits with the Nehemiah buried in Wrexham in 1713. The next earlier record found thus far is for Nehemiah baptized at Oldham, the son of Paul Ogden of Hollinwood.[11] Hollinwood is nearby to Middleton, perhaps indicating that this area is the nexus for the name Nehemiah in this Ogden family.
Furthermore, Quaker records in Cheshire clearly show that his last wife, Sarah Wilde was from Oldham. Oldham is adjacent to Middleton and the two are so closely related that Middleton parish is frequently referenced as Middleton by Oldham.
Nehemiah's placement as the father of David Ogden the Quaker is circumstantial, based on his residence at Wrexham, in Wales, near Middletown, and the fact that his son David's birth record coincides will with the birth date expected for David the Quaker. If birth records could be found then we would know more exactly. Therefor giving reference to a father's name is a beginning in this search. Thanks to all who have input, it is valuable.
