Biography

According to his death certificate, Joseph King Odell was born, June 29, 1860, in Sullivan Co., NY; town unspecified. The 1860 US census of the town of Liberty, Sullivan Co., NY, enumerated Aug. 23, 1860, found Joseph with his parents, in the home of his grandfather, Joseph, and other members of the extended family. He was listed as 1 month old.[1]. It can be surmised that Joseph was born, at home, in Liberty, as was common for the time period. The 1900 US Census of Meredith, Delaware Co., NY, also has Joseph's birth as June 1860.[2] Joseph was the son of Ruben (Reuben) Odell and Emily Ester (Esther)Oliver. (from his death certificate cited below.) Joseph's middle name is also from his death certificate but the 1905 New York State Census gives his middle initial as K. [3]

Joseph married Minerva Oliver, his double first cousin, April 6, 1879, in Meredith, NY.[4] (see note on double first cousins in Research Notes) They had ten children.

He and Minerva took in members of the family, from time to time, as needed, regardless of their own situation.

Joseph died October 20, 1928, in Meredith, NY. (death certificate in the possession of Lorraine O'Dell, his great great granddaughter)

Research Notes

To date, only one primary source has been found for Joseph; his death certificate. Fortunately, his death certificate provides several details of his life: his birth date, his death date, his wife's name and his parents' names.

Double first cousins: In this case, there were 2 marriages: a sister and brother from one family married a sister and brother from another family:

Darius Oliver married Hannah Odell.
Darius' sister, Emily Oliver, married Hannah's brother, Reuben Odell.
Darius and Hannah had a daughter, Minerva Oliver.
Emily and Reuben had a son, Joseph.

Minerva and Joseph were double first cousins; first cousins through each of their parents. It's much easier to see it drawn out than to describe it in words.
