Mattie Ochs was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on 28 August 1868, the youngest child of Julius and Bertha Ochs. Her siblings included Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of The New York Times and The Chattanooga TImes; George W. Ochs-Oakes, who was Mayor of Chattanooga and publisher of The Philadelphia Public Ledger; Col. Milton B. Ochs; Ada Ochs Adler of Chattanooga; and Nannie Ochs of New York.[1]
Mattie Ochs attended Mount Notre Dame Convent in Cincinnati, Ohio.[1]
In 1896 she married Bernard Talimer. He was an executive with the The Philadelphia Public Ledger and died in 1938. There is no mention of children in her obituary. She was active in the Philadelphia Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Philadelphia Art Alliance.[1]
The 1930 census recorded Bernard Talimer and Mattie Talimer, both 61 years old, in Phladelphia, Pennsylvania. Both had been 27 years old at their first marriage. Mattie was said to have been born in Ohio to parents born in Germany,[2] but this appears to be a mistake; her parents had moved to Tennessee some time earlier.
Mattie (Ochs) Talimer died on 25 May 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she lived in the Warwick Hotel. [1] She was to be interred in the Ochs Family Mausoleum at Temple Israel Cemetery, Mount Hope, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. [1]
