Julius Ochs has Jewish Roots.

Julius Ochs was born in 1826 in Munich (München), Stadtkreis München, Bavaria (Bayern), in what is now Germany. He was the son of Lazarus Ochs and Nannie Wetzler. Julius came to America in 1848 where relatives were already established in Kentucky. He lived variously in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and New York serving in the civil war and many public positions. [1]

Julius Ochs married Bertha Levy, a fellow German Jewish immigrant, in 1855 in Davidson County, Tennessee.[2] After their marriage, they resided in Cincinnati, Ohio, where several of their children were born.

Their children were:

  1. Adolph Simon Ochs, 1858-1908[3]
  2. Nannie Ochs (daughter born in Cincinnati, Ohio) 1860-1947[4]
  3. George Washington Ochs[5]
  4. Milton Barlow Ochs, 1864-1955[6]
  5. Ada Ochs
  6. Mattie Ochs

During the U.S. Civil War, Julius Ochs was an officer in the Union Army stationed in Cincinnati, engaged primarily in guarding the Ohio River. His wife Bertha, however, was sympathetic to the Confederacy. According to family lore, she smuggled quinine to Confederate sympathizers in Covington, Kentucky, by loading it into her baby carriage and walking her baby across the river from Cincinnati to Covington. When she was discovered by guards, she escaped punishment because of her husband's status as a Union Army officer.[7] After the war the Ochs family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where Bertha's opinions were less unpopular than in Cincinnati.[8]

Julius Ochs and his family moved from Knoxville to Chattanooga after his son Adolph Ochs became publisher of the Chattanooga Times newspaper in 1878. Adolph employed his brothers and his father in his new enterprise. When the 1880 U.S. Census recorded the family in Chattanooga, Julius Ochs, age 54, was described as a newspaper manager; Adolph S. Ochs, 22, and George W. Ochs, 18, were journalists; and Milton Ochs, 16, was a printer.[9]

He died in 1888 [10]
